More than 50 physicians and health care professionals provided
services at the health fair.

M

ore than 40 patients were
screened at an Interfaith
Health Fair on May 31
at People's Community Services in
Hamtramck, where 50 doctors and
health care professionals volunteered
their services. The nonstop rain
affected the turnout.
One patient was found to have
extremely high blood pressure and
was referred for follow-up care and
treatment. The fair provided the fol-
lowing screenings and care: blood
pressure, diabetes, BMI, pulse oxim-
etry, oral screenings, ear cleaning,
urology, cardiology, family practice,
internal medicine, nurse midwife,
mental health (social workers), nutri-
tion and cooking demonstrations,
substance abuse counseling, insur-

ance navigation and representatives
from the kidney foundation.
"We served fewer clients than we
expected, but we spent more time
with them, providing a broader range
of services:' said Robert Cohen,
executive director of the Jewish
Community Relations Council,
which organized the event with
the Michigan Muslim Community
Council and the Interfaith Leadership
Council of Metropolitan Detroit.
"Also, we had a larger pool of
health care and other volunteers —
Jewish, Muslim and Christian — and
they spent more time getting to know
each other. Several of them told us
they specially enjoyed the interfaith
collegiality, which was certainly one
of our goals."
