IWitness In Michigan

The IWitness program kicked off July 13
in Flint with a teacher training seminar.
Dr. Stephen Smith, Shoah Foundation
executive director, hopes the impact
of the program will go beyond simply
teaching Holocaust history to students.
"'Witness is designed to be very much
a part of the school community's life and
enable students to tell the story in their
own words to keep it relevant:' he said
during a recent visit to
Detroit.
"It's listening to
the life histories of
individuals and then
asking, 'What kind
of commitment do
you want to make
Al
yourself? How are you Stephen
going to relate it to
Smith
your own life and your
own world? What really resonated with
you?' And that could be about racism
and intolerance, or tenacity and hope.
"Just because it's about the Holocaust
doesn't make it dark and negative — it
can be powerful and inspirin'
Smith recalled an instance where the
program achieved this aimed result.
"Interestingly enough, the winner of
last year's IWitness challenge, which is
national video completion, was a young
woman whose parents were from El
Salvador. When she saw the Holocaust
survivor talking about deportation it
resonated very strongly with her; Smith
said.
"The type of deportation her fam-
ily was subjected to was very different
from the deportation of genocide, and
she understood the distinction. What
it enabled her to do was to talk
about the issue of immigration
reform:'
This lasting impact is what the
program is designed to inspire —
activists and humanitarians of the
future.
"Education is the cornerstone of
creating a better world:' said hon-
oree Ford, a champion for educa-
tion. "I love what the USC Shoah
Foundation is doing to inspire
current and future generations to be
responsible and tolerant global citizens:'

n Sept 10,
William
Clay Ford
Jr. will be honored
by the USC Shoah
William Clay
Foundation with
Ford Jr.
its Ambassador for
Humanity Award.
Ford, executive chairman of Ford Motor
Company, was chosen because of his
philanthropic efforts and dedication to
humanitarianism.
The Los Angeles-based USC Shoah
Foundation was founded by filmmaker/
philanthropist Stephen Spielberg in 1994,
and uses audio and
video testimonies
from survivors to
preserve the history
of the Holocaust and
promote future educa-
tion.
The gala will also
introduce IWitness, an
Steven
educational program
Spielberg
that uses these testi-
monies in schools, to Michigan.
'Witness is already being used in
Pittsburgh and New York. In Michigan,
schools and cities are still to be deter-
mined. Local businessman and philan-
thropist Mickey Shapiro of Bloomfield
Hills, a Shoah Foundation executive
board member, was instrumental in
bringing IWitness to the state as well as
suggesting Ford for the award.
Shapiro has his own strong ties to the
work of the Shoah Foundation and the
IWitness program — both of his parents
are Holocaust survivors.
He was born in a Displaced
Persons camp in Stuttgart,
Germany, and moved here at
age 2.
His parents' testimonies are
part of the Shoah Foundation
archive. Because of his expo-
sure to a large number of
Mickey
survivors throughout his life,
Shapiro
he realizes the importance of
ensuring their stories live on.
"For me, this is it," he said. "I've lived
it. I've seen it. I'm emotional about it.
And I feel good about helping and doing
something, and letting the world know
that this is a terrible thing and we don't
want it to happen again. If I don't do it —
my generation — then who will?"
