nside the Federation
building in Bloomfield
Township, JOIN Intern
Vanessa Farkas is busy
helping to plan Live! Work!
Play! In the D, a networking
event sponsored by NEXTGen
Detroit and Hillel of Metro
Detroit.
This event is designed to
show young professionals all the
benefits living and working in
Detroit has to offer, from networking and
career opportunities to the accessibility
of Jewish social life.
Farkas has the unique opportunity to
assist in an event designed for her peers.
Through the Jeanette and Oscar Cook
Occupational Intern (JOIN) Program,
Farkas does community outreach work
at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and has been an asset to the
planning process for the event because
of her insight on what people her age
want to hear.
The July 15 event includes an exclusive
behind-the-scenes tour of One Campus
Martius, Chase Tower and Chrysler
House as well as a panel discussion
featuring several young adults living
and working in Detroit. The evening
concludes with a networking reception
on the rooftop of the Madison Building.
"It has been an amazing experience to
work alongside [NEXTGen intern] Emily
Zussman for Live! Work! Play! In the D,"
Farkas said. "From what I've seen so far,
I am confident this is going to be a great
networking opportunity for young adults
who are looking to become more active
in the Metro Detroit area."
Through weekly seminars at various
Jewish communal agencies, the JOIN
program sets a strong networking
foundation for each of its 17 students.
JOIN student Lillian Apel works as a
multi-departmental intern at Federation
and has gained a new perspective on
community outreach and the event
planning process.

Vanessa Farkas

"Working at Federation gives
me access to how all the different
departments work together to help our
Jewish community," Apel said. "It also
provides me with amazing opportunities
to meet important and influential people
in our community. I can already see how
my network is growing."
From a professional perspective,
NEXTGen Detroit associate Brittany
Karson can attest to the importance of
networking and being immersed in the
professional Jewish community.
Beginning as a student at Western
Michigan University, Karson was
involved in Jewish life on campus, where
she began to build her professional
leadership skills. As the former MSU
Hillel/Hillel Campus Alliance of Michigan
director of campus initiatives, Karson
has seen how beneficial those skills
can be as she worked with students to
bring Jewish social programming to their
campuses.
"Events like Live! Work! Play! In the
D are so important because they help
students build a strong base on which to
develop their professional leadership and
networking skills," Karson said.
"Being connected to the Jewish
community and having the ability to
network can open so many doors for a
young professional, just as it did for me.
These skills can be applied to campus
leadership in or outside of a Jewish
setting, and they are invaluable when
you enter the professional world."

Live! Work! Play! In the D is free and open to all college-aged adults
and young professionals. Registration is available at jewishdetroit.
org . The event begins at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, at the
Compuware World Headquarters, One Campus Martius in Detroit.
