T
he 2015 season could have
been a disaster for the
Bloomfield Hills High School
baseball team.
In only their second year as a com-
bined team of players from the former
Andover and Lahser high schools,
the Blackhawks were handed another
challenge just before the season when
Coach Mike Boyd took a leave of
absence following his arrest.
Bloomfield Township police
— responding to a Freedom of
Information Act request from the
Oakland Press — alleged Boyd caused
a four-car accident March 26 on west-
bound Maple Road and Indianwood
Trail and fled the scene.
But the team persevered. Thanks to
the leadership of seniors like Aaron
Benson and Coach Frank DiVito,
who was promoted to interim coach
after four years as assistant coach,
Bloomfield Hills put together a 25-8
season this spring that included
a championship in the Oakland
Activities Association Blue Division.
"We had a good team dynamic:'
Benson said. "We believed in each
other. We were closer this year than
last year. Having a year together under
our belts helped:'
DiVito, who was named the perma-
nent coach after the season, said the
team was exceedingly unselfish.
"There were no egos:' he said.
"Everyone pulled for each other."
Benson was a pitcher (2-1, 3.12
ERA) and outfielder. DiVito said he
became one of the Division 1 state-
ranked team's best pitchers by the end
of the season. Benson was scheduled
to start a district tournament semi-
final game against host Birmingham
Seaholm, but the game was rained out.
Sophomore third baseman Max
Rosenfeld was one of Bloomfield Hills'
stars. He batted .402 and was named
to the All-District team. An outstand-
ing student with a 3.67 grade-point
average (4.0 last semester), Rosenfeld
was an OAA Scholar-Athlete honoree.
"If Max stays humble and works
hard, which is what he's all about, he'll
be playing college baseball; Benson
said. "He's a really strong kid"
Strikeout
A fantasy batting practice fundraiser
Sunday, Aug. 2, at Comerica Park —
home of the Detroit Tigers — for the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation's
Stars of Tomorrow scholarship program
has been canceled. But there's a good
chance it will be held next year.
Frank Reinstein, one of the event
organizers and a foundation board
member, said a date conflict was one
of the major reasons why the event was
called off.
Aug. 2 also is the first day of the JCC
Maccabi Games in Milwaukee. Detroit
will have a delegation of athletes and
coaches there along with parents.
"We had a lot of support in the
Jewish community for the batting prac-
tice event, but the date just didn't work
out:' Reinstein said. "Nobody lost any
money, and we didn't have any issues
with the Tigers. They couldn't have
been nicer. Their hands were tied on
the date because of the Tigers' schedule,
and so were ours"
Maccabi Mania
Speaking of the JCC Maccabi Games,
Detroit will be sending athletes and art-
ists to Milwaukee (Aug. 2-7) and Fort
Lauderdale, Fla. (Aug. 9-14).
Detroit will have soccer, flag football,
inline hockey and volleyball teams in
Milwaukee along with bowlers, dancers,
golfers, table tennis and tennis players.
Swimmers and tennis players will be
in Fort Lauderdale along with baseball,
basketball, lacrosse, soccer and softball
teams.
ArtsFest will be in Fort Lauderdale.
Specialties include acting/improvisa-
tion, culinary, dance, musical theater,
rock band, star reporters, visual arts
and vocal music/glee.
Detroit's delegation will be traveling
by bus to Milwaukee and flying to Fort
Lauderdale. Franci Silver and Karen
Gordon are Detroit's delegation heads
and Stuart Bass, Ariella Monson and
Larry Silver are assistant delegation
heads.
This year's Maccabi Games athletes
must be at least age 13 and not older
than 16 by July 31. ArtsFest partici-
pants must be between 13 and 17 by
July 31. ❑
