Health Check

Hadassah sponsored a symposium focusing on women's heart issues.

eart disease kills more women than all
forms of cancer combined. Women's
heart attack symptoms differ from men's.
Research focuses mostly on the physiology of
men, and women are harder to diagnose. How can
women improve their cardiovascular health?
To address these issues, Hadassah Greater
Detroit sponsored a daylong Woman's Heart Health
Symposium May 28 at the Birmingham Community
House attended by 120 women.
Keynote speakers Dr. Pam Marcovitz, director of
the Ministrelli Women's Heart Center at Beaumont
Hospital Royal Oak, and Dr. Shalini Modi, chief of
cardiology at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital,
stressed the importance of getting an annual physi-
cal exam, monitoring cholesterol levels, walking at
least 30 minutes several days each week, eating a
heart-healthy diet and calling 911 right away when
you experience heart attack symptoms.
Julie Feldman, MPH, a registered dietician and
author, connected healthy food choices to the pre-
vention of heart disease. And Denise Parr led pop-
up exercises to show how easy it is to incorporate
movement into our everyday lives. The Tennis &
Golf Company of Royal Oak provided sportswear
for informal modeling during lunch.
Event co-chairs were Carol Ogusky, Joan Epstein
and Shirley Robbins.
