ather's Day is a special day in
the InterCongregational Men's
Club Summer Softball League.
That's because fathers, families and soft-
ball are a perfect combination.
"Every year, the league discusses
whether to play on Father's Day and
overwhelmingly ifs agreed that on
Father's Day, we should play:' said league
spokesman Chuck Freedman.
`Almost all teams received moral
support from their families this year
Freedman said. "Many teams have
fathers and sons playing together."
Temple Shir Shalom, Temple Kol Ami
and Congregation B'nai Moshe led the
16-team league after the Father's Day
games, each with a 4-0 record. League
games were rained out on two Sundays.
Sophomore Star
It was a bitterly cold day this spring.
Temperatures were in the low 30s and a
biting wind made it feel even chillier.
Up to the plate in a high school
baseball game stepped Max Rosenfeld.
Ignoring the cold wind blowing right at
him, the Bloomfield Hills sophomore
third baseman hit a home run about 340
feet over the leftfield fence at Berkley.
"That's when I knew he was some-
thing special; said first-year Bloomfield
Hills coach Frank DiVito. "To have the
ability to do that on the varsity level as a
10th grader is remarkable
The home run shocked Rosenfeld.
"The ball came off the bat really good,
but I didn't think it was going over the
fence because it was so cold our he said.
"I put my head down and started run-
ning hard because I thought the ball was
going to stay in the park I was surprised
to see the umpire waving me around"
Rosenfeld had a hot bat all season for
the state-ranked Blackhawks in their sec-
ond year as a combined Bloomfield Hills
Andover and Bloomfield Hills Lahser
team.
He batted .402 with 37 hits, 34 RBIs,
seven doubles and three homers. At one
point of the season, Rosenfeld had 15
hits in 18 at-bats.
"There's no doubt Max was a huge
part of our success:' DiVito said.
The success, which surprised many
who predicted a nondescript season for
the Blackhawks, included a 25-8 overall
record and a 9-3 mark as champion of
the Oakland Activities Association Blue
Division.
Rosenfeld had the game-winning
RBI in a four-run rally in the top of the
seventh inning May 19 in a 10-9 win
over Berkley that clinched the division
championship.
He began the season at first base, an
unfamiliar position, to replace a senior
who went out of town on spring break.
"Max was shaky initially at first base
because he didn't have a lot of reps there,
but he worked hard and became a ser-
viceable first baseman; DiVito said.
Rosenfeld was moved to third base
when the team's roster was full again and
that's where he stayed.
It was another new position for him
because he'd played shortstop most of his
life "but this wasn't a crazy transition;
he said. "We had a senior shortstop and
third base was the open job. Playing
there eventually became second nature
for me
Shortstop could very well be
Rosenfeld's position next year. And
DiVito expects him to be part of the
team's pitching rotation.
This isn't the first time Rosenfeld has
made headlines on the baseball dia-
mond.
Last summer, he helped the Detroit
U16 team win a gold medal at the JCC
Maccabi Games hosted by Detroit. Two
years earlier, he was on the Detroit U14
team that won a silver medal in the
Maccabi Games in New York.
Rosenfeld hopes to play varsity bas-
ketball for Bloomfield Hills next winter.
He was on the junior varsity team last
season.
