Much To Do!

My relationship with my daughter,
Jamie, was in trouble, and I didn't
know how to fix it. We had always
been close in the past, but last year
things began to change. We didn't
see eye to eye on anything - her
friends, what she wore, where she
went - almost every conversation
ended in an argument. It was as if
she had become a different person,
and I didn't know how to talk to her
anymore. Whatever I tried to do or
say to make things better only made
everything worse.
My husband told me to give her
space, but I'm her mother; I couldn't
just stand back when I knew
something was wrong. My friend
Julie suggested I call the rabbi at
Friendship House. At first I refused.
What could a rabbi tell me about my
own daughter? But things at home
were getting worse instead of better,
so I finally made the call. I'm so
glad I did.
The rabbi listened to everything
I said, and then he made some
really helpful suggestions, including
referring us to a good therapist at
an agency with a sliding fee scale.
It turned out Jamie was struggling
with depression, and she had started
experimenting with drugs in an
attempt to feel better. Now she is
getting the help she needs, and I'm
learning how to relate to her in a
way that is supportive instead of
overbearing.
I'm so relieved! I had begun to feel
like a bad mother. Now I realize I was
dealing with a very difficult situation,
and I needed support. There's no
shame in that. Through Friendship
House, I met other parents who have
similar challenges, which has been
extremely helpful. I don't feel anxious
and alone anymore, and I know Jamie
is finally on the right track.
