broadcaster for the Reds before being

Four days after the World Series
ended on Oct. 12, 1940, which fell on
Yom Kippur, the Nazis proclaimed
the formation of the Warsaw Ghetto.
The Nazis delighted in announcing
decrees against the Jews on Jewish
holidays.
But the news in America that day
turned to Western movies cowboy
idol Tom Mix. While returning from
a personal appearance tour, Mix's
custom-built automobile skidded on
gravel in Arizona and off of Route 90,
crashing in a ravine killing the expert
horseman and hero to millions.
In good shape in the back seat
were six hat boxes containing Mix's
trademark large-brimmed creamy
white Stetson cowboy hats. President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was
stunned by the news of the death
of his friend, who marched on his

famous horse, Tony, in FDR's inaugu-
ral parade.
Four days later, Hank Greenberg,
29, the highest paid player in base-
ball at $50,000, registered for the
military draft. Oct. 16 was designated
Registration Day according to the
Selective Training and Service Act
requiring all men between the ages
of 21 and 35 to sign up for the draft
lottery.
Events in Europe would change the
lives of Greenberg and millions of
other Jews in the coming days. ❑
