LSU catcher Kellsi Kloss threw the ball away and Wald came home to tie the game 3-3. A 5-foot-1 freshman, Wald was an Academic All-State honoree in high school. She's a Farmington Hills resident. U-M lost to Florida in the best-of- three championship series. Slammin' Segal Outfielder Jeff Segal had an outstand- ing senior season for the Hiram College (Ohio) baseball team. The North Farmington High School graduate posted single-season personal collegiate highs in runs (27), hits (48), doubles (11), RBIs (25), stolen bases (9), batting average (.378), on-base per- centage (.440) and slugging percentage (.504) while playing in 36 games. His 14 multi-hit games included two four-hit efforts. Segal became a starter as soon as he arrived at Hiram and he ended up play- ing in 124 games in four years. He was a career .288 hitter in college with three homers and 63 RBIs. The West Bloomfield resident also had 19 stolen bases. One Goal, One Loss Coach Barry Brodsky's Birmingham Marian High School girls soccer team lost only one game all season, but the defeat ended up knocking the Mustangs out of the Division 2 state tournament. Pontiac Notre Dame Prep beat Marian 1-0 in overtime in the championship game of a district hosted by Auburn Hills Avondale. In an interesting twist of fate, No. 1-ranked Marian (15-1-4) handed Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood its lone loss of the season in the district semifinals, beating the Cranes 2-1 on a goal with 52 seconds left. Marian had defeated Notre Dame Prep twice earlier in the season, 4-1 in a regular-season game and 1-0 in the Catholic League title game. Brodsky told Hometownlife.com after the regional game he doesn't believe the sports axiom that it's difficult to beat a team three times in a season. "Notre Dame Prep played well and deserved to win," he said. "They were better than us today:' Marian has become a perennial power in Brodsky's 14 years as coach. The Mustangs played in the state champion- ship game from 2012-2014, winning once. Solid Brick Zach Homer is headed to Edmonton to play in one of the most prestigious hockey tournaments in the world for young players. The 10-year-old from Franklin will compete June 29-July 5 in the Brick Invitational, a showcase for 9- and 10-year-old players. Zach is a member of the Detroit Jr. Red Wings, one of 14 teams that regularly play in the tourna- ment. Zach is a fourth-grader at West Maple Elementary School in Bloomfield Hills in the Birmingham School District. Bat At Comerica Don't forget about the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation's inaugural fantasy batting practice sessions Sunday, Aug. 2, at Comerica Park. Two sessions are offered for the fun- draiser: 9 a.m.-noon and noon-3 p.m. Each session has room for 100 batters, who will hit against an ex-Detroit Tigers pitcher and have an opportunity to shag balls in the outfield. There is no age limit for batters, although participants under age 18 must be accompanied by a paying adult on the field. Friends and family can watch batting practice from the stands with no charge. Cost is $200 for batters age 18 and older and $150 for batters under age 18. Sponsorship opportunities are avail- able. Contact the foundation at www. michiganjewishsports.org or call (248) 592-9323 for more information. Proceeds will benefit the founda- tion's new Stars of Tomorrow program that helps young Jewish athletes pay for opportunities like camps and travel teams and helps pay college tuition. ❑ Please send sports news to stevestein502004@yahoo.com .
