Award Winners
Jewish Youth Awards is an annual
scholarship program through National
Council of Jewish Women, Greater
Detroit Section for Jewish high school
seniors. Applicants were judged on an
essay and their leadership and com-
munity service. This year's essay topic
was "What person or experience has
had the greatest impact on your Jewish
identity?"
The applications were first judged
anonymously by a committee. The
finalists were then interviewed by a
panel of judges: Barry Freund, Sarah
Cohen and Suzanne Simon.
Finalists received their awards at
a ceremony on April 28. Honorable
mentions ($250) were Meredith Berlin,
Logan Guenther, Jacob Nadel and
Rebecca Tarnopol. Runners-up ($500)
were Rachel Morof and Madison
Sabbath. Second-place winner ($1,300)
is Daphne Logan. The 2015 Jewish
Youth Awards winner and recipient of
$2,500 is Jodi Backalar.
Generous sponsors were Dina and
the late Herman Brodsky, and the late
Esther and late Nathan Katz.
Emanu-El Installs
Lay Leadership
Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park
installed its lay leadership for the com-
ing year at Shabbat service on June 12.
The new president is Dennis Kayes;
vice presidents are Richard Gold,
David Hart, Lynn Cooper, Susan
Stettner and Ruth Hurwitz.
Debora Renner is treasurer and
Martin Leibowitz is secretary. The
immediate past-president is Bruce
Klein.
Trustees include Jacqueline Bean,
Dan Danzig, Janeen Fetterman,
David Findling, David Gubow, Jon
Kabbe, Fern Katz, Ivan Katz, Laura
Sacks Kohn, Ruthanne Okun, Bob
Levitt, Michael Patterson, Mike Rich,

JCC Book Fair Seeks
Books By Local Authors
The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit is in search of
local authors for its Annual Jewish
Book Fair to be held this November at
the JCC in West Bloomfield.
Books should be written by Jewish
authors and/or have Jewish content,
must have a Michigan connection and
must have been published in 2014
or 2015. Fiction, nonfiction, poetry,
cookbooks and more will be consid-
ered, as will self-published material.
Those whose works are selected to
be included will have the opportunity
to participate in an event especially for
local authors and will have their books
available for sale at the Annual Jewish
Book Fair.
The deadline for submissions is
July 30. For guidelines, contact Sarah

Belle Isle Cleanup
On June 5, Deloitte professionals embarked on a daylong volunteer project to support
Metro Detroit's nonprofits as part of the firm's 16th annual Impact Day. Volunteers
at the Belle Isle Conservatory painted fencing and assisted in cleanup of the park.
Deloitte's Michigan Managing Partner Mark Davidoff and Sen. Debbie Stabenow joined
the group to present Belle Isle Conservancy President Michele Hodges with a $1,000
donation to support the conservancy's efforts in maintaining and enhancing Belle Isle
Park.
Singer Entertains At
B'nai Moshe Music Fest
On Sunday, June 7, Congregation B'nai Moshe
in West Bloomfield hosted a Family Music Fest
featuring Michael Krieger, singer, songwriter
and recording artist.
Krieger brought his special talent and songs
of joy, healing and celebration as he entertained
a large crowd, with many people dancing in
their seats and singing along.
This event was made possible by the generos-
ity of the Nettie A. and Norman Freilich Senior
Fund. Diane Freilich, daughter of the late Nettie
and Norman, introduced Michael to the crowd,
