ewish Family Service cel-
ebrated an inspiring group of
"JFS Superheroes" during the
agency's Annual Meeting and Community
Recognition Event at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield on
Tuesday, June 2.
The evening began with a moving trib-
ute to the late Patti Nemer, a former JFS
board member and a driving force behind
the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic
Abuse, JFS Cancer Connection and the
Cancer Thriver's Network for Jewish
Women.
The evening's "Superhero" theme paid
homage to Nemer's affinity for Wonder
Woman and her efforts to be a hero for her
family and community even as she battled
terminal cancer.
Nemer's son, Michael Baum, and
brother, Larry Nemer, addressed the audi-
ence as JFS memorialized Patti Nemer by
renaming its Employee of the Year Award
in her honor.
Larry Nemer helped present the
award to JFS Family Case Management
Supervisor Julia Kessler-Hollar, who was
chosen for the honor because of her well-
established commitment to helping the
agency's clients through all means avail-
able to her. Kessler-Hollar was surprised
by the award and by the unexpected
arrival of her parents, who came from out-
of-state for the event.
Alex Goldberg — who helped build
the JFS Transportation program over
the course of more than 20 years into a
model service providing 30,000 rides a
year — was honored with the JFS Lifetime
Achievement Award.
Dedicated volunteer Kathie Park was
celebrated as the agency's Volunteer of the
Year for her 10-plus years of service, while
Barry Rubin was named the Mentor of the
Year for his long-standing commitment to
the JFS Mentor Connection program.
Art Van Furniture was named the

furniture donated by the chain during
the response to last summer's devastat-
ing floods. Art Van Vice President Diane
Charles accepted the award and offered
$1,000 gift cards to each of the other
award winners to recognize their impres-
sive commitment to service.
JFS also marked a transition in its lead-
ership, as Sheldon Stone stepped down as
board president after a three-year tenure,
making way for former JFS Treasurer Don
Rochlen to move into the role. In addition,
new board members Marc Bakst, Michael
Berke, Beth Grossman, Micki Grossman,
David Jaffe, Mara Moss and Mark Picklo
were elected to terms.
