T

he B'nai B'rith Golf Classic is not
only surviving but thriving on a
calendar crowded with fundrais-
ing golf outings.
Eighty golfers played on a sunny day,
June 8, at Tam-O-Shanter Country Club
in West Bloomfield in the 33rd annual
B'nai B'rith outing. Equally as important,
there were 30 sponsors.
"That's as many sponsors as we've had
in the 10 years I've been a Golf Classic
co-chair," said David Lubin, who shares
the duties with Michael Fishman.
Lubin said it takes hard work by the
Golf Classic committee year in and year
out to attract golfers to the outing, but ifs
worth it.
"People's lives are busier, and getting a
day off from work is becoming tougher,"
he said. "We emphasize that the outing is
a great way to spend a day with friends
and co-workers and it's for a good cause.
We share the wealth:'
Golf Classic proceeds support the B'nai
B'rith Great Lakes Region and its new
scholarship fund, area B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization chapters and Hillel chap-
ters on state college campuses.
Scholarships of $2,500 each were
presented at the Golf Classic to Madeline
Jacobson, Rebecca McDonald, Shane
Perlin and Kayli Silverstein.
Rae and Manny Schane won the Golf
Classic's annual cruise raffle. They have a
choice of a Caribbean, Alaska or Disney
cruise plus $500 cash.

Plan B Is A Success

The 25th annual Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational on June
1 at Franklin Hills Country Club in
Farmington Hills will be remembered
not just for its historical significance and
perfect weather.
Former Cincinnati Reds great Joe
Morgan, the expected recipient of
the Greenberg Memorial Lifetime
Achievement Award, couldn't make it to
the invitational because of health issues.
ESPN reporter Jeremy Schaap, who
normally emcees the after-golf dinner
program, also had to bow out because of
a family matter.
No problem. In stepped Detroit media
personality Mike Stone to handle the
emcee duties and ex-Detroit Tigers stars
Willie Horton and Dave Rozema to
answer questions from the audience.

The invitational was sold out for a
seventh consecutive year. There were
159 golfers and 240 attendees altogether,
including those who only attended the
dinner.
Financial adviser Robert Levy won
the raffle for a trip for two to the 2016
Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga.
A new twist this year of hiring a pro-
fessional auctioneer worked well, accord-
ing to David Blatt, executive director of
the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation,
which presents the invitational.
Money raised at the invitational once
again will benefit the Lawrence and Idell
Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center in
Farmington Hills.

Go Green! Go White!

Michigan State University fielded a team
at the annual National Hillel Basketball
Tournament hosted by University of
Maryland Hillel.
"The tournament didn't fit into our
schedule the last three years, but this
year it was before final exams so we put a
team together; said Justin Polk, program
associate for MSU Hillel and the Hillel
Campus Alliance of Michigan.
Eight players were on the MSU men's
team. Polk served as the team's liaison,
coach and "guy who made sure we got
everywhere on time he said.
Polk is from Commerce Township. He
now lives in Okemos. He graduated from
the MSU School of Journalism in 2014.
Players were senior Austin Lerner
(Chicago), graduate student Eytan
Keidar (West Bloomfield), junior Jeremy
Schlafstein (Rockville, Md.), senior Alex
Sklar (West Bloomfield), junior Darren
Weiss (Bloomfield Hills), senior Jake
Solomon (Harrison, N.Y.), freshman
Stephen Lipshaw and senior Ben Luger
(both of West Bloomfield).
Included were Shabbat services and an
interactive Torah study and a game show
competition.
Polk said he was impressed with the
number of teams in the tournament
(42). That was a record for the 5-year-old
event. There were more than 300 play-
ers from 26 universities and more than
1,000 participants total.
There also was a men's team from
Metro Detroit Hillel in the tournament.
Metro Detroit defeated MSU for its only
win.
