Blessed Brunch
JSL annual event honored community members age 95 and older.
n May 29, more than 500 people filled Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in Southfield for the 14th annual (the
late) Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Brunch
hosted by Jewish Senior Life in honor of all of the members of
our community age 95 and older.
Sen. Carl Levin offered greetings, Rabbi Aaron Starr blessed
the crowd, which included his grandfather Wolf Gruca for
the first time, and Lisa Lis brought opening remarks from the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
Approximately 80 honorees were present at the luncheon,
with another 100-some not in attendance. JSL Foundation
Director Carol Rosenberg emceed the program dressed as
Golda from Fiddler on the Roof
"Living to 95 means they must have done something right,"
said Barbra Giles, JSL associate director, who planned the
event. Many honorees walk into the room "the picture of well-
ness; you would never think they're 95 and older," she says.
There are usually more than two full tables of individuals
age 100 or older. The oldest honoree was 107.
