A

kiva Hebrew Day School
held its 51st annual dinner
on May 11, when 400 people
gathered at Adat Shalom Synagogue in
Farmington Hills for dinner and award
presentations honoring key faculty and
staff.
The "Salute to Israel" recognized
Early Childhood Director Lisa Parshan;
she and her family will be leaving
Detroit to make aliyah to Israel. The
positive impact she has had over the
past eight years includes instilling an
"eagerness and excitement for learning
within our Early Childhood students:'
said Jordana Wolfson, Akiva's chief
administrative officer.
The school also bids farewell to its
Israeli shlichim (emissaries), who typi-
cally spend a year immersed with the
students and the greater community
in learning opportunities and activities
that reflect the spirit of Israel.
Rabbi Yochanan and Michal
Schrader are heading back to Israel
after a three-year commitment of
teaching, educating and inspiring
all they encountered. Along with
their family, Wolfson said, they have
enhanced lives with their warmth, pas-
sion and dedication.
Every year, the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit's Alliance for
Jewish Education accepts nomina-
tions from local administrators for
two Jewish educator awards. This year,

both awards acknowledge educators at
Akiva. Channa Greenfield, first- and
second-grade Hebrew and Judaics
teacher, received the Grinspoon Award
for Excellence in Jewish Education.
Greenfield has worked in Jewish edu-
cation for 47 years — 34 of them at
Akiva. "Morah Channa" is described as
a "master teacher whose gentle ways
and warm demeanor help her develop
lifelong relationships with her students
and families:'
Greenfield said, "Teachers are con-
stant learners. If we do not model that
for our students, we have failed to do
our jobs."
The Emery & Diane Klein Award for
Excellence in Jewish Education went to
Sharon Ozrovitz, teacher in the Akiva
Early Childhood Center's program for
2-year-olds.
"Morah 0" has been an early child-
hood teacher for 15 years. Her warmth,
expertise in early childhood and pas-
sion for Jewish education is evident
on a daily basis in her colorful, vibrant
classroom. Daily mitzvah notes, Jewish
holidays and weekly Shabbat celebra-
tions cement Jewish values and love of
Jewish rituals.
Each award comes with opportuni-
ties for teacher enrichment.
