The Townhouse Burger

ive or six years ago, you
couldn't find many positive
headlines about the city of
Detroit. Economic devastation, polit-
ical corruption, rampant
arson — that's what most
writers seemed interested
in and, frankly, even today
some reporters are still fail-
ing to notice the sea change
in the Motor City.
Is there work left to do?
Sure. But one dramatic
turn, perhaps little more
than a footnote to some in
the aftermath of the largest
municipal bankruptcy in modern
history, is the restaurant renaissance
that's happening everywhere from
Corktown to Midtown.
Talented, ambitious and auda-
ciously embracing the risk in bring-
ing world-class dining back to the
once-abandoned city, entrepreneurs
like Jeremy Sasson are staking a lot
on the recovery the world seems to
be watching with bated breath.
Later this year, Sasson will import
his bistro concept Townhouse from
Birmingham to the heart of Detroit
— the corner of Woodward and
Congress.
With the sort of bon vivant vision
typically reserved for cities like
Los Angeles or Miami, he's work-
ing quickly to open the doors of
his 8,000-square-foot space in the
45-story One Detroit Center. But the

most intrepid detail he's made pub-
lic? A 3,000-square-foot greenhouse-
style, all-glass dining space with a
retractable roof, allowing his cus-
tomers to literally feel the
pulse of the city year-round
— rain, snow or shine.
Sasson has no partners
in the deal, making the
risk (and the reward) his
and his alone. Sure, some
might call it foolhardy.
Then again, he was rolling
the dice with the open-
ing of the first Townhouse
in Birmingham just four
years ago. I certainly remember the
armchair quarterbacks who said his
$19 hamburger wouldn't appeal to
a "Midwest crowd:' but it's certainly
Sasson who's having the last laugh as
he thrives in Birmingham and pre-
pares to expand his reach.
With his patio open again for the
summer, June was the perfect time
to revisit one of my favorite menus.
If by now you haven't tasted the
burger, you're truly missing out on
one of the area's finest — 10 ounces
of hand-pattied steak cuts on a sen-
sational brioche bun; smothered in
grilled onions and Cabot white ched-
dar. Topped off with fries — served
crispy enough so you won't have to
ask for them "well done." I'm confi-
dent even the most provincial Iowa
corn grower would say it's worth
every penny.
