last column, I invited you to join me
on May 8 for a 70th anniversary com-
memoration of VE Day. It was held at
Memorial Park in Royal Oak, the future
home of The Michigan WWII Legacy
Memorial, of which I am a proud board
member. Well, I'm thrilled to report that
several hundred of you showed up and
were treated to an exhilarating afternoon
of patriotism, topped off by a special Fly
Over by the Yankee Lady B-17 Bomber
courtesy of our friends at the Yankee Air
Museum.
Thank you for your support! Visit

inspiring video recap. I guarantee you it's
better than watching someone's dog or
cat do something cute on YouTube. And
if you're able, please donate a few shekels.
Last, but by far not least, a happy,
healthy 85th and 80th birthdays respec-
tively to my cousins Clara and Maurry.
The same Maurry of "Maurry, the Ice
Cream Man" fame I proudly wrote about
on his 75th birthday and that many of
you fondly remember from your child-
hoods. Thank you, cousins, for your
decades of love — and Muarry for the
free ice creams in front of Mumford High
School. EChaim! ❑

In the hours before people were
due to arrive, Jeremy Tick and his
partners at Eyes on Midtown
excitedly put the finishing touches
on their eyewear shop for a grand
opening party in their renovated
Detroit space.
"Picture it," said Jeremy. "We
were arranging displays, moving
furniture, even screwing in light
bulbs. An electrician was up on a
ladder installing one last light fixture.
We didn't know there was a pipe
full of liquid coolant directly behind
where he was securing the screws."
Fluid leaked inside the walls and
flooded their new place overnight.
"It was devastating," Jeremy said.
"We had just opened, we had put
so much capital into the build-out
and the launch, and we had no
revenue to touch." In the midst of
remediation and restoration, and
trying to get the insurance re-
imbursement, Jeremy, who had
conversations with Hebrew Free Loan
about another business venture,
approached them for this one.
"We were doing the clean-up on
credit cards and personal funds,
trying to get the shop open again,"
Jeremy said. "Hebrew Free Loan
gave us the space to breathe and
re-open, and bring in some revenue.
It was a long wait for insurance to
reimburse us."
The high-end optical boutique is
back up and running, giving exams
and crafting custom eyewear.
"Hebrew Free Loan helped us do
this," said Jeremy. "What a boon to
the community to have somewhere
that can back you up when you
need it."
