Chaired by Yad Ezra Vice President Nicole Lester, the dinner was May 13 at Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak Park. Since Yad Ezra opened 25 years ago, the kosher food pantry has relied on a corps of dedicated volunteers to work with a small staff to fulfill its mission of feeding vulnerable families. Almost 17 million pounds of free groceries have been distributed to families since the pantry operated out of a basement office on 10 Mile Road. Volunteers help with every aspect of Yad Ezra's efforts. The total number of volunteer hours logged to date is 2 million. Since 2001, a volunteer has been presented with the Diane and (the late) Emery Klein Volunteer Recognition Award. This award was established by Yad Ezra's leadership to honor the Klein's heartfelt, unwavering support. This year, the Volunteer of the Year was presented to Bert Stein of West Bloomfield, an 18-year volunteer who has volunteered diligently twice a week and has recruited a group of vol- unteers to attend the pantry's regular lunch-and-learn programs. Though he served on Yad Ezra's board and on committees, his favorite role is pass- ing out the chickens, gefilte fish and ground beef, a task he does with a smile and a nice word to all. "I accomplish more in my life when I walk into Yad Ezra to help others:' he says. "I look forward to coming and would miss it if I didn't come every week. I have met so many wonderful volunteers I did not know before, and have made great friendships and a terrific luncheon group. I enjoy our cli- ents and have formed friendships with many of them:' In honor of Yad Ezra's 25th anni- versary, Barbara and Dr. Ira Zaltz arranged for Daniel Cascardo, a local artist, to create a piece of art with volunteers that will be hung in the warehouse. The artwork has been underwritten by the Zaltz family and is being dedicated in loving memory of Barbara's father, Emery Klein. Event committee members included Yehudit Jubas, Yad Ezra secretary; Barbara Zaltz and Ruth Anne Lippitt, Yad Ezra board members; and Judy Allen, women's philanthropy liaison.
