Come To The Cabaret
Andiamo makes entrance into intimate cabaret world.
P
OTPOURRI...
He's done just about everything
else in the restaurant business, so
why not a stab at the small cabaret mar-
ket? ... Fine dining, casual dining, banquet
hall, celebrity showroom with world-noted
entertainers, outdoor showroom also with
"name" acts, etc.
Joe Vicari's recent entrance into the
intimate cabaret world reminded many
of the little shows that dotted New York's
Greenwich Village as it recently went over
big time in the lower level of his Andiamo
Bloomfield Ristorante on Telegraph, south of
15 Mile, Bloomfield Township.
The evening's entertainer, Italian-
American singer Aaron Caruso, capped
an enjoyable evening with his charming
personality, beautiful voice and crowd-
pleasing knack of playing to the public
with smiling grace.
The little cabarets at Andiamo on
Telegraph this year will have four Saturday
runs ... Following Caruso will be Mark
Randisi, Aug. 15 ... Heidi Hepler & Michele
Ramo, Oct 3 ... Ani, Nov. 28.
His Andiamo Celebrity Showroom, next
door to Andiamo Italia, 14 Mile, west of Van
Dyke, Warren, will take a summer vacation
and return in September ... But before it
does, Joe will end the present series with a
bang ... Saturday, June 6, will have the won-
derful Scintas and their high-energy variety
show with singing, impersonations, comedy,
etc. ... The always sell-out crowd
leaves after much stand-up
applause to the entertaining
antics of Frank and Joe Scinta,
Peter O'Donnell and Janien
Valentine ... The Scintas are Las
Vegas regular standouts.
MORE GREAT RESPECT
and high recognition garnered
as a restaurateur and person-
age is once again apparent for
Antonio Rugiero, president of
the Antonio's Cucina restaurants,
including the original Roman Village Cucina
Italiana in Dearborn (taking in the complete
Antonio Corporation).
Tony will appear as special guest speaker
at the 69th annual Festa della Repubblica
Celebration by the Italian-American
Cultural Society, Sunday, June 7, at the
Italian-American Cultural Society Banquet
& Conference Center, Romeo Plank Road in
Clinton Township ... It commemorates the
birth of the Italian Republic ... and the gen-
eral public is invited with doors opening at 2
p.m. and a formal program at 3 p.m. ... Food
and entertainment will follow.
AMONG THE THINGS that new
Detroit Lions football star Laken
Tomlinson will have in common with
Chris Hutchinson, owner-partner of
Pepino's restaurant in Walled Lake, with
mother-in-law Kathy Kwiecinski and
aunt Carole Carson, are his hopes to
also become a working doctor after his
football days are over ... Both men are
former All-American football linemen
... Tomlinson at Duke University and
Hutchinson at University of Michigan ...
Hutchinson is presently in the emergency
room at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak ...
Tomlinson is hoped to be a Detroit Lion
force.
NEW SUNDAY BRUNCH at Bistro 82,
Royal Oak, sounds like it will have items
many would hardly find on another such
menu ... It begins Sunday, May 31, and runs

OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT ... The
Pope met with his cardinals to discuss a pro-
posal from Benjamin Netanyahu, the leader
of Israel. "Your holiness:' said one of the
cardinals, "Mr. Netanyahu wants to challenge
you to a game of golf to show the friendship
and ecumenical spirit shared by the Jewish
and Catholic faiths:'
The pope thought it was a good idea, but
he had never held a golf club in his hand.
"Have we not:' he asked, "a cardinal who can
represent me against the leader of Israel?"
"None that plays golf very weir said the
cardinal, "but there is a man we named
Jack Nicklaus, an American golfer who is a
devout Catholic. We can offer to make him
a cardinal, then ask him to play Benjamin
Netanyahu as your personal representative.
In addition to showing our spirit of coopera-
tion, we also will win the match:'
Everyone agreed it was a good idea. The
call was made. Of course, Nicklaus was hon-
ored and agreed to play.
The day after the match, Nicklaus reported
to the Vatican to inform the pope of the
result "I have some good news and some
bad news, Your Holiness:' said the former
world-class golfer.
"Tell me the good news first, Cardinal
Nicholas:' said the pope.
"Well, Your Holiness, I don't like to brag,
but even though I've played some pretty ter-
rific rounds of golf in my life, this was the
best I have ever played:'
"What is the bad news?" the pope asked.
Nicklaus sighed. "I lost to Rabbi Tiger
Woods by three strokes:'

HE MAY NOT know it, but the genial per-
sonality of Peter Ginopolis, co-owner with
brother Johnny Ginopolis at Ginopolis' BBQ
Smokehouse on 12 Mile, Farmington Hills,
was once a big inspiration for 15-year-old
Brian Kanak ... Today, the executive chef at
Toasted Oak Grill & Market, celebrating its
fifth birthday in the Renaissance Baronette
Hotel, Novi Road, Novi, will never forget
when, as a young man, he used to eat at the
formerly named Ginopolis' On The Grill and
marveled at Peter's dedication to customer
satisfaction with that great personality of his
that always makes such a big impression ...
As a result, Brian went from dishwasher to
general manager to head chef of esteemed
kitchens in his various dining treks ... with
no formal or culinary school experience.
GETTING MUCH TALK is the prem-
ises-made fresh jelly at Pickles & Rye Deli,
Orchard Lake Road, between 14 and 15 Mile
Roads, West Bloomfield ... So many people
enjoy it much more than the jellies that come
in packages.
IT WAS A HUGE HIT last year, with its
outdoor barbecue dinner, excellent sports
panel, general conviviality, etc. ... and with
fingers crossed for good weather ... The
big, annual Hank Greenberg Memorial
Golf Invitational is here again with more
large surprises ... Date is Monday, June
1, at Franklin Hills Country Club, West
Bloomfield ... Remember, you don't have to
be a golfer to attend the dinner and sports
