Art Scholarships For
Planet Lori Camp At BBAC

The Planet Lori Art Camp is designed
for children who had or have a parent
or close relative with cancer. Art is often
used to help children communicate, over-
come stress and heal from tragedy.
The camp honors the memory of Lori
Haber Buckfire, a Detroiter who died in
July 2010 at age 41. She was diagnosed
with Stage IV ovarian cancer in May 2005,
just eight weeks after giving birth to her
son Hayden. Lori, who earned her bach-
elor's degree in art from Arizona State
University, loved children and cherished
her many afternoons doing art projects
with Hayden.
Planet Lori Art Camp, run by the
Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
(BBAC), is held daily from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Aug. 24-28. The Lori Haber Buckfire
Foundation is providing full paid scholar-
ships to children (ages 5-15) to attend the
camp. Eligible application will be accepted
on a first-come basis, and space is limited.

FULFILLMENT

ome of us may not want to
admit it, but growing-up in
Detroit in the 1950s and 1960s,
we watched professional wrestling every
Saturday. There were two main shows
on Detroit TV: Motor City Wrestling on
WXYZ-TV and Big Time Wrestling on
CKLW-TV from Windsor, Ontario.
But, did you know that the man most
responsible for putting on shows in
Michigan with such famed wrestlers as
Dick the Bruiser, Bobo Brazil, The Sheik
and Leaping Larry Shane was Jewish?
Bert Ruby was a star soccer player
as a youth, who had a 20-year career as
a professional wrestler. Born Bertalan
Rubinstein in Columbus, Ohio, in 1910,
he moved to Detroit in the 1930s and
became a wrestler. Ruby retired from the
ring in 1954 and became the premier pro-
moter of wrestling shows in Michigan. His
Motor City Wrestling show aired for nearly
two decades in the 1950s and 1960s.
What is a lesser-known fact is that,
