n Sunday, April 19, West Bloomfield's
Keter Torah Synagogue hosted the fourth
in its "Different Cultures, Different
Foods" series. Each event presented a peek into the
rich cultures and traditions of Jews from Middle
Eastern and North African countries.
The event focused on Morocco. The presenter
was Laurette Mamane Levadi, who is a descendant
of a prominent Moroccan family of judges, Torah
scholars and poets. The most famous was Rabbi
David Hassine, who lived in Meknes (1727-1792).
He was the author of the Tehila le David (Song
of David) book and several Bible commentaries,
and is considered to have been one of the greatest
Jewish Moroccan poets and one of the best-known
figures of Jewish liturgical poetry.
I stepped into Keter Torah just as Rabbi Sasson
Natan started introducing Levadi. I know her as
a soft-spoken, low-key and always-smiling gentle
lady. As she took the microphone, I watched her
transform in front of my eyes into a confident
dynamic entertainer. She was telling her family's
rich history in Morocco and detailing Jewish life
and folklore there. At times she was serious and
at times very funny. Her presentation ended when
she broke into into spontaneous singing with Rabbi
Sasson joining in.
Following the presentation, we were treated to
a feast of Moroccan cuisine. There was couscous
with vegetables, a zucchini dish, Moroccan beets,
squash, and a sweet prune and apricot dish. The
meal ended on a high note with exquisite Moroccan
Mimouna desserts and mint tea. The entire meal
was prepared by Moroccan Keter Torah members
Victoria Keslacy and Andree Nordan.
Also, Nordan shared instructions for preparing
the traditional sweet desserts and then described
her treasured Moroccan artifacts assembled on a
special display table.
In cooperation with Keter Torah Synagogue,
event co-sponsors were StandWithUs-Michigan,
Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah, National
Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section
and Zionist Organization of America-Michigan
Region.
The next event will focus on Yemen on June 14.
