Two write for the IN's month- ly "Red Thread" section: Harry Kirsbaum, whose eye for irony informs his "Nightcap" column, and Ben Falik, whose young, socially active perspective is found in Pr A his "Jewfro" column. Harry Kirsbaum and Falik Kirsbaum placed second and third, respectively, in the com- petition among local publications of similar circulation size. Receiving an honor- able mention was the IN's monthly Page 3 columnist, the popular humorist and local radio personality Alan "Big Al" Muskovitz. The JN also was rec- ognized for its coverage of Israel during the sum- mer war with Hamas. She won a third-place prize for localization of a national story along with Contributing Writers Robin Schwartz and Barbara Lewis for "Israel Solidarity" The nine- page package of articles on July 17 showed how the outbreak of war affected Metro Detroiters who were in Israel or had loved ones there. Cohen, along with Contributing Writer Shelli Liebman Dorfman, won a third-place award in the general news cat- egory for their Aug. 28 report on "The Life And Death Of A Lone Soldier; about a young, former Oak Parker whose past emotional demons fol- lowed him to Israel. Cohen also won a third award, an honor- able mention for her May 1 feature story, "Rare Mitzvah:' about the unusual Orthodox celebration of the redemption of the first- born donkey. Ronelle Grier Sam Gringlas Robert Sklar David Sachs Contributing Writer Ronelle Grier claimed second place in the fea- ture writing competition for her July 31 cover story about a transsexual teen, "Call Him Hunter:' Grier also won an honorable mention for her general news story about the successful campaign to thwart a vote to boycott Israel at the University of Michigan. "Hail To The Victors" was a cover story on April 3. Winning second place in general news was JN Special Writer Sam Gringlas, a U-M student who serves on campus as managing news editor of the Michigan Daily newspaper. His Sept. 4 cover story, "Blight Buster" reported on Erica Ward Gerson, who is spearheading the revi- talization of housing in the city of Detroit.
