o It For Detroit (Di4D),
an annual micro-grant
competition presented
in partnership by
Federation's NEXTGen Detroit, Yad Ezra
and Repair the World, will focus on the
issue of food justice at its upcoming
event on Wednesday, May 27.
Since its inception, Di4D has
awarded grants to local organizations
making a difference in the areas of
literacy and education, environmental
preservation and health and wellness.
For the last two years, Di4D has put
a much-needed spotlight on the issue
of hunger and food justice in Detroit,
raising awareness and awarding funds
to initiatives that are working toward
sustainable solutions.
"We are thrilled to be a part of this
exciting opportunity that welcomes and
applauds efforts to raise awareness
about food insecurity and food justice,"
said Lea Luger, executive director of
Yad Ezra. "I'm so pleased that Audrey
and William Farber have joined our
partnership with NEXTGen Detroit and
Repair the World to acknowledge and
assist grassroots efforts that merit their
attention and support."
Di4D welcomes local nonprofit
organizations and community projects
to apply for micro-grants, the funds for
which have been generously donated
by the William and Audrey Farber
Family Foundation. Three finalists are
selected from all of the applicants, and
the public is invited to come and cast a
vote for the initiative that speaks most
to them. The first-place winner receives

a $3,000 grant, second place is $2,000
and third place is $1,000.
"Our goal this year is to help
the finalists establish and grow
specific efforts to further volunteer
engagement," said Sarah Snider,
NEXTGen Detroit outreach associate.
"Getting the community involved
through meaningful volunteer
opportunities is often critical to the
success and longevity of these types
of initiatives, and we're so happy we
can provide the support that will allow
finalists to focus on and improve their
volunteer engagement."
This year's Di4D finalists are the
Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue
and Eden Gardens Block Club for
Eden Gardens Farms, Neighborhoods
Building Urban Gardens (BUG) and
Neighbors Building Brightmoor for
Brightmoor's Artisan and Cooperative
Community Kitchen.
"It's no surprise that we received
many worthy applications, given the
exciting food justice work happening
in Detroit," said Ben Falik, director
of Repair the World: Detroit. "I know
that each of the three finalists will
have amazing stories to tell —
and opportunities for everyone in
attendance to get involved."
Di4D: Food Justice is on May 27
at 7 p.m. at Yad Ezra in Berkley. All
are welcome to come hear the three
finalists speak about their work and
cast a vote. Results will be announced
