W
hat happens when a Jewish
woman and a Chaldean
woman who each love box-
ing join forces?
You get "Showdown at Shenandoah,"
a Friday, May 29, boxing card at
Shenandoah Country Club in West
Bloomfield promoted by the two women.
The Jewish woman involved in the
show is Jackie Kallen. That's probably no
surprise. She's a trailblazing and success-
ful boxing manager who was the inspira-
tion for the 2004 film Against the Ropes
that starred Meg Ryan.
Connie Shamoun is the Chaldean
woman on the promotion team. Her son
Zachariah Shamoun is featured on the
Shenandoah card along with Kallen's new-
est boxer, Doren Van Horn Jr.
Zachariah Shamoun is 3-0 as a profes-
sional after he went 153-7 as an amateur.
Van Horn is 7-0 as a pro.
"It's very unusual for a woman to pro-
mote a boxing show. For two women to
do it is doubly unusual," Kallen said.
Kallen and Shamoun met about six
months ago at an area boxing show where
Shamoun and Van Horn were fighting,
and the two women became friends
immediately.
"Connie is bubbly, outgoing and a box-
ing mom, which I can relate to:' Kallen
said. "When my boxers are in the ring, I
can feel it when they get hit. It's a mater-
nal instinct':
Shamoun brought the idea of promot-
ing a boxing show at Shedandoah to
Kallen, who loved the suggestion. Both
women want to revive boxing in the area,
and they figure Shenandoah is a great
place to start.
"Shenandoah a great venue for the
Jewish and Chaldean communities and
the entire area, in fact, because it's easy to
find from all directions. We'd love to have
a show there every other month," Kallen
said.
"We feel our shows will be a fun night
out for fans and an opportunity for area
boxers of all nationalities and ethnici-
ties to advance their careers without any
strings attached:'
Big Al Promotions and Dbouk
Promotions are also on the team that's
presenting the May 29 show.
Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. and box-
ing will start at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $125
(ringside), $100 (VIP) and $40 (general
admission). Ringside and VIP seats will
be at tables and include dinner. The venue
seats about 800-900.

No Mystery
The Mystery Men are a mystery no longer.
After sneaking into the Brotherhood-
Eddie Jacobson B'nai B'rith Bowling
League playoffs, the Mystery Men rolled
through the postseason last month and
won the league championship.
The Mystery Men are Steve Achtman,
Warren Frankford, Michael Rosen, Brad
Silber and Larry Woodberg. Four men
bowl in each league match, so the team
had a spare part.
Seven teams — the first-place finishers
in each of four divisions in the first and
second halves of the season — made the
three-week, single-elimination playoffs.
The Mystery Men won the second-half
title in the Tigers Division.
Seal Team No. 7, which won first-half
and second-half championships in the
Lions Division, received a bye in the first
round of the playoffs and moved right
into the Final Four.
The Mystery Men beat Seal Team No.
7, and Spares Are A Miracle (Red Wings
Division) beat Yogi's Rollers (Pistons
Division) in the semifinals.
In the championship match, The
Mystery Men upset Spares Are A Miracle
16-8. Rob Greenfield, Bryan Levine, Mike
Lieberman and Lyle Schaefer made up the
Spares Are A Miracle roster.
So what else is happening in B'nai B'rith
sports?
Softball season is under way at Drake
Sports Park in West Bloomfield, where
the four teams play doubleheaders on
Sunday mornings. May 3 was the opening
week. There were no games played May
10 because of Mother's Day.
Playoffs will be Aug. 9 and Aug. 16 after
a 10-week regular season.
Twelve golfers are participating in the
nine-hole Thursday afternoon golf league
at the Links of Novi. Week No. 3 of a
16-week season was May 14.
