Ehrenreich's mother and both
sisters were all casualties of
early-onset Alzheimer's.
Ehrenreich was raised
Conservative; he had a bar
mitzvah and sang in Hebrew
choirs. His father was "very
well-versed in Judaism — not
only the letter of the law but the
spirit of the law he transmitted
to me he says.
The show educates and
inspires without preaching.
Ehrenreich's goal is to inspire
people to reach for their own
tragedies and understand how
they inform their lives. He sees
himself as a bridge — someone
who can take the universal
lessons of the Holocaust and
connect them with all types of
people, not just Jews.
"A guy came up to me after
the show once and said, 'Please
don't take this as an insult. I'm
so tired of hearing about the
Holocaust. But the way you
put it and who you are made
me understand why it has any
relevance at all.' That's the cool-
est thing that could possibly be
said," Ehrenreich says.
The show takes the audience
through his own journey as a
typical American teenager —
devoted to rock-and-roll and
embarrassed by his parents'
heavy accents and predisposi-
tion to calling him "Yanke"
instead of the Americanized
"Jake' He was good at sports,
popular with girls and really
into music, which fills the show.
In typical rebellious fashion,
he railed against authority and
dropped out of college to play
drums and sing on tour and
later on Broadway. When he

Josh Radnor, 40, the star of

wrote the show, it wasn't out of a
desire to seek more success.
"I was already a very success-
ful band leader, making a lot of
money, and I had a great life
says Ehrenreich, who now lives
in Monroe, N.Y., with his wife,
Lisa, and their 17-year-old son,
Joseph Dov-Behr, who is named
for two uncles who perished in
the Holocaust.
But he knew he had to tell the
story of his family — the story
of survivors of all kinds.
"These people have children
and they have lives and those
lives are affected by what
happened to their parents.
And it affects our culture in a
major way," he says. "You'd be
surprised how many people
out there have survivor back-
grounds:'
Ehrenreich searched for the
universal themes of his personal
story. "While the Holocaust
is a Jewish story, the idea of
overcoming adversity and being
reborn and finding your way
through tragedy and learning
to live in the light are universal
themes:' he says.
"The children of survivors
have a very unique perspec-
tive says Renee Fein, program
coordinator for the Program
for Holocaust Survivors and
Families, which the perfor-
mance benefits. "A lot of 2Gs
helped their parents learn the
language, customs, how to
navigate a new culture.
"The children of survivors
help bring joy back into their
lives:' Fein adds. And the sec-
ond generation helps carry the
torch of remembrance in our
community:"
