The trainings will use the framework of Los Angeles-based Magen Yeladim Child Safety Institute's "Safety Kid" educational program to give parents, children, school staff and mental health professionals the tools needed to prevent child abuse in the community. Five trainers from Magen Yeladim will come to Detroit for the pro- grams. The trainings are expected to reach 1,000 parents, 500 staff and 58 classrooms through Yeshivas Darchei Torah, Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, Akiva Hebrew Day School and Lubavitch Cheder. Trainings will include two parent work- shops, three staff trainings, four admin- istration roundtables, a rabbinic meeting, a "Seminary Savvy" training for 11th-and 12th-grade girls and their mothers, teacher training and a three-day seminar to train 15 local volunteer Safety Kid educators. Principals from local participating schools had approached Noam Detroit about bringing this program to the com- munity. Noam and JFS have since collabo- rated closely to make the comprehensive training series possible. The program is funded by a grant from the Jewish Fund. Phipps Detroit Jewish News Foundation Archivist T his week, we don't have a Quick Click story, but we do have some questions. Where can you find a variety of interesting reading? From the serious to the light-hearted? Maybe you are a fan of the Star Wars movies? (I never knew one says, "May the fourth be with you" on May 4.) Or are you inter- ested in how Detroit's Jewish commu- nity felt about the founding of Israel? Or, are you interested in fun, old advertisements, like the one for Chef Boyardee spaghetti sauce and Jewish cooking? Or, maybe you just like cat photographs, like that of the feline in the IDF uniform? All of these stories, as well as hun- dreds of thousands more, can be found in the archives of the Detroit Jewish News. But, there is another way to interact with the history within the JN archives — the Facebook page of the Detroit Jewish News Foundation! Corporate Creative Director Deborah Schultz dschultz@renmedia.us FULFILLMENT circulationdesk@thejewishnews.com Customer Service Manager: Zena Bosley Purr-im Kitty DEPARTMENTS I'm a proud Jewish cat — proud of my heritage and homeland and proud to wear the uniform of the Israel Defense Forces, if only as a Purina costume. This is one of 28 costumes my owner, Wendy Ruth Gottlieb, made and dressed me up in to show off in her new picture book Purr-im Cat (Pitspopany Press, 2007). All my many costumes are extremely authentic in detail, right down to my Queen Esther tiara or my white Mogen David Adom E.M.S. medical jacket. But despite the authenticity of my army uniform — including the khaki kippah and Lion of Judah epaulets — there's one detail I could live without. That darn dog tag!
