WHO'S WHO PHOTO BY JOSHUA HANFORD The 10th-annual Movement Electronic Music Festival will be held May 23-25 at Detroit's Hart Plaza. The festival features more than 100 of electronic music's pioneering legends and illustrious heavyweights (including DJ Mike Huckaby, left) in the birth- place of techno music (for details, dates and tickets, visit movement.us). Here, Aaron Siegel's guide to his favorite picks appear- ing this year: to remix tracks. As Siegel took on DJ projects, he found inspiration from those who don't stick to any particular genre and instead push boundaries. He admires the early Detroit radio DJs, such as Electrifying Mojo and the Wizard. He also has been motivated by recordings played by 1980s DJs on WBMX from Chicago. Siegel, who still listens to a range of musical styles from rock to clas- sical, is a fan of John Zorn, who takes an experimental approach to various styles, including klezmer. "I consider myself culturally Jewish," says Siegel, who had his bar mitzvah at Temple Beth El. "I'm more spiritual than religious and like music that is spiritual:' Siegel, who often travels to New York for work and to be with his longtime girlfriend, has settled into a street around the corner from where his great-grandfather, Abraham Siegel, had a scrap metal yard. In a music community that understands heavy metal as part of an art form, Siegel sadly recalls that his great-grandfather and the man's secretary were murdered in an attempted robbery. "I like to think of the better times in the area" Siegel says. "I'm hoping to create a new future very different from what my great-grandfather experienced" RESTAURANT Mediterranean Persian Cuisine 30005 Orchard Lake Road Farmington Hills (North of 13 Mile) www.pars1resturant.com 248.851.8200 May 23 Carl Craig with Mike Banks: "Both Carl [DJ] and Mike [keyboards] are Detroit techno veterans so there will be some special moments during their set of live performance, improvisation and DJing." Luke Hess: "Luke has been mak- ing some great records the last few years. His sound is raw and deep — a soundtrack for a late-night drive around the city." May 24 Model 500: "This is the alias of Juan Atkins, who set the foundation for techno music 35 years ago. The Model 500 band, consisting of Atkins along with members from Detroit's Underground Resistance crew, will play much of Juan's work, many titles now considered classics." Mike Servito: "Mike cut his teeth as a DJ during the rave scene in Detroit in the mid '90s. He is a great selector with impeccable taste." May 25 Ben UFO: "London's Ben UFO has been gaining a steady following over- seas, and after hearing some of his mixes, I can see why. He doesn't stick to a particular genre, has very good taste and isn't afraid to experiment." D. Wynn: "One of the unsung heroes in techno, D. Wynn was a resident DJ at the Music Institute, a legendary downtown club in the late '80s." L ❑ AMERICAN PHAROAH The Preakness Stakes, the second jewel in the Triple Crown of thor- oughbred horse racing, takes place on Saturday, May 16, in Baltimore, with coverage on NBC begin- ning at 4:30 p.m. The favorite is Derby winner American Pharoah (stories vary about the misspell- ing of Pharaoh). Anyone who watched the celebration following the Derby knows that the horse's owner (and his oldest son) are very demonstrative winners. Far fewer know that Pharoah's owner, Ahmed Zayat, 52, is an Egyptian- born Jew who, in 1980, came to the States, where he owned an Egyptian beverage company, which he sold for millions to Heinekin (he retains other interests in indus- trial companies). Zayat, a father of four, resides in New Jersey; a 2011 Daily Racing Form profile says he "is so observant that during Passover, for instance, there were days he would not return calls, owing to religious custom." ❑ Pars Mediterranean Restaurant 20% Off Total Food Bill Exp. 09.09.15 Hours: Mon-Thur 11am-10pm Pars Mediterranean Restaurant Buy One Entrée Get 2nd Entrée Fri & Sat 11am-11pm 1 /2 Off Sunday 11am-9pm Exp. 09.09.15 2004900 Patio Now Open!!!
