he sun is shining, birds are
chirping, it's 28 degrees
out, and there's snow on the
ground. That's right ladies and gentle-
men, it's finally spring in Michigan.
And with this unpredictable season
comes one of my favorite times of the
year — brunch season. Restaurants
open their windows, set up their pati-
os, and welcome the once-hibernating
residents of Metropolitan Detroit to
remember what it feels like to enjoy
a weekend morning (or
weekday, if you're one of
those lucky people the rest
of us see casually strolling
through Birmingham with a
Starbucks in hand at 11 a.m.
on a Tuesday).
So, in the spirit of the
season, on a somewhat
chilly Saturday morning
(OK, it was the early after-
noon) my beautiful fiancee,
Jordan, and I ventured out
for brunch to celebrate the birthday of
our dear friend Ryan Cohn, a senior
investment adviser at Friedman
Integrated Real Estate Solutions. He
suggested we head to Ferndale, to try
the Fly Trap, the self-proclaimed "finer
diner" made somewhat famous by the
Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and
Dives.
Now, seeing as how the show's host,
Guy Fieri, doesn't have the discerning
palate of a kvetchy Jewish 20-some-
thing, I thought revisiting the menu
wasn't the worst idea, and frankly, it
turned out to be a pretty great idea.
The Fly Trap definitely channels the
expected funky Ferndale vibe. I don't
know if the assembly of random fix-
tures and salt and peppers shakers that
don't match is the result of some one-
off bargain bin sale or the careful culti-
vation of a designer with an incredibly
discerning eye, but the motif certainly
prepares you for a menu serving up
everything from crab cakes and eggs
to Vietnamese pho.
Hungry for a traditional
breakfast, we decided to start
off with the soup du jour; a
thick, creamy chickpea soup
garnished with an oversized
pita crouton and tahini. The
bowl could have easily fed six
of us, but as good as it was,
the three of us finished it off
long before the waitress could
bring a second round of cof-
fees. If you're lucky enough
to make it in and spot the soup on the
large blackboard announcing their
rotating fare, do yourself a favor and
try it.
Hoping to keep things light, Jordan
ordered the "Cowboy Curtis:' a seared
rib eye served with two fried eggs,
homemade barbeque sauce and your
choice of toast. Needless to say, she
cleaned her plate. I didn't expect much
from diner steak, but candidly it was
cooked perfectly, the cut of meat was
marbled with just enough fat, and I
