N

ow that it has finally (we
hope) stopped snow-
ing, the spring weather
marks another great tradition in
Michigan: the beginning of a slew
of art fairs that continue through
the summer into early fall.

Mother's Day weekend brings
one of the earliest of this sea-
sons outdoor art fairs — Art
Birmingham, which also encour-
ages the creative interests of chil-
dren as part of its activities lineup.
Kids up to age 12 will be shown
how to make an oil pastel or a
flower bouquet to be matted and
sealed in a cellophane envelope.
They also can take part in a piggy-
bank hunt with randomly selected
winners receiving a $25 deposit in
Main Street Bank.
Some 150 juried artists —
showcasing paintings, ceramics,
photography, jewelry, glass, wood,
sculpture, mixed media, fiber,
metal and more — will be on
hand to discuss their works. Carole
Berhorst, known for her pottery,
will be among the Jewish artists
from near and far showcasing new
designs and spanning the media as
fairs around the state draw visitors.
To make it easy to plan your
visit, we have compiled a list of
some favorite fairs. Most of the
juried events listed below have
planned for special entertainment
and food vendors. This year, the
destination list includes a few festi-
vals beyond the Metro Detroit area
for those who want to make a day
trip or weekend while appreciating
artistry.
As the time gets closer for each
event, be sure to check for changes
in details.
