flier's Markets, a staple
of the Metro Detroit gro-
cery scene since 1941,
announced the sale of its seven
stores to Cincinnati-based Kroger
Company. Six of the stores — in
West Bloomfield, Ann Arbor,
Northville, Plymouth and South
Lyon and on Haggerty Road in
Commerce Township — will reopen
under the Kroger name after the sale
closes in July. Another retailer will be
sought to fill the location on Union
Lake Road in Commerce Township.
Details of the sale were not disclosed.
"My decision was not an impulsive
one; it's one that I've been consid-
ering for a long time. I'm eager to
spend more time with my family
and stop working 100-hour weeks:'
said Hiller's CEO Jim Hiller, whose
father, Sidney Hiller, opened the
first store in 1941 under the name
Shopping Center Market.
While some longtime custom-
ers have expressed concern about
Kroger's ability to maintain Hiller's
high levels of product offerings and
customer service, Hiller is confident
the standards established by his
family will be upheld during and
after the transition.
As I came to know the Kroger
Company, I recognized they share
my values — they are the most
charitable company I know. They
embrace and fully support the things
I hold dear," he said.
While continued employment for
Hiller's current staff is not guaran-
teed, they are encouraged to apply
for jobs in the Kroger stores, accord-
ing to Ken McClure, consumer com-
munications manager for Kroger's
Michigan Division.
"We know customer service was
one of Hiller's great strengths, and
we would like to retain as many
employees as possible to continue
that reputation:' said McClure, who
worked at Hiller's for more than 20
years, most recently as the com-
pany's chief operating officer.
McClure said Kroger will continue
offering specialty, locally made and
ethnic foods, including the large
selection of Passover foods for which
Hiller's was known.
"I expect I will be buying my
Passover products and fresh fish from
Kroger in the future said Hiller.
