He was born in Detroit on Dec. 27, 1924. He attended Hoptman Wayne University (now Wayne State University), where he received a master's in social work. The majority of his career was spent as a social worker at Jewish Family Service in Southfield. Mr. Hoptman was an accomplished photogra- pher and aficionado of music and film, making frequent presenta- tions on these subjects to the Jewish Community Center's Institute of Retired Professionals, including Music Lovers; Seniors of Active Retirement (SOAR; affiliated with WSU), of which he was a faculty member; Oakland Community College's Adult Learning Institute; Fox Run retirement commu- nity; and other organizations. He is survived by his children, Claire Wendy Cohen of Tallahassee; Matthew Hoptman and his wife, Marla Abrams, of New York City; Ari Hoptman of Minneapolis; Maya Hoptman and her husband, (John) Christopher Kaltwasser; their daughter, Julia Kaltwasser; his partner, Barbara Keidan; in-laws, Paul and Barbara Goodman. His parents, Sarah and Morris Hoptman, and sister Yetta (Trustman) predeceased him as did his wives, Martha (Ray) Cohen, Muriel Kingston Hoptman and Janis Waxenberg.
