New York or Europe right at home.
"Our customers won't just buy
something to buy it locally," he
explains. "They know what they
want now."

Fashion As Expression

He asserts that the perception is
still strong that the Midwest isn't a
place for fashion — yet says, "We're
[Birmingham] the least 'Midwest' of
the region."
That said, though he is the
epitome of fashion forward,
he doesn't consider himself a
trendsetter. For Kay, style embodies
a person's core.
"Fashion is a way for people to
express themselves in a way that's
very relevant. Even if you're not a
'fashion person,' everything you put
on is fashion.
"A trend might work on the
runway, but not on every person
who walks in the door," he says. "I
don't always look for the trends. I
look for what people are going to
buy — what they are going to want.
"Separates are a trend we lean
into because our customers love
them," Kay says.
The matching jacquard crop
top and skirt by Tanya Taylor are
scrumptious, he says. He also says
the pencil skirt is an essential from
the runways — but the pencil of the
moment is softer, with crochet or
lace for a modern touch.
Some of the sought-after
designers that well-styled celebs are
spotted in adorn the meticulously
hand-selected merchandise at Found
Objects from designers Kate Moss,
Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale and
love Zoe Karssen. They also carry
Tanya Taylor, Sonia by Sonia Rykiel
or Maison Ullens — all exclusive
in Michigan. They have one of the
largest selections of the sought-after
Iro collection, according to Kay.
Other designers include Band
of Outsiders and Lela Rose, both
exclusive in Metro Detroit. If you're
in search of Zoe Karssen, BLK Denim
or Rebecca Taylor, you're likely to

unearth it at Found Objects. If they
don't have it, they'll try to find it for
you and have it shipped to the store,
because that's how Kay keeps his
customers coming back for more.
The bottom line at Found Objects
is finding the unique and catering
to a clientele who knows what they
want when they see it. At just 25,
Kay treasures the value of excellent
customer service and testifies that
he and Laurie will go to any length
to please their clients.
"We're more than happy to make
special orders or do anything we
can for our customers," he says.
And though he "literally lives at the
store," he says he would have it no
other way. The future looks bright,
as the mother-son duo would like
to expand their brand to other savvy
cities in the not too distant future. ❑

Found Objects is located at 168 S.
Old Woodward Ave. in Birmingham.
