metro A scene from last year's fashion show Mother's Day Fashion Show At Hechtman Apartments The three gift shops run by Friends of Jewish Senior Life offer apparel and accessories that will be exhib- ited at 1 p.m. Monday, May 4, in a Mother's Day Fashion Show featuring models from among the residents of Meer and Hechtman apartments and Fleischman Residence/Blumberg Plaza. Taking place in the Hechtman din- ing room, the fashion show will fea- ture 12 resident-models accompanied by a special female friend and wear- ing corsages made by Temple Israel preschoolers. Proceeds from sales of merchandise sold by the gift shops support Jewish Senior Life programs and services. The event is open to the public. Volunteers are needed to help run the gift shops, says Leslie Katz, direc- tor, Friends of Jewish Senior Life. The Fleischman gift shop is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Friday; the Meer gift shop is open 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday-Friday; and the Danto gift shop is open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday- Friday. Lag B'Omer Celebration, Barbecue In Oak Park Detroit's Jewish community is invited to celebrate Lag b'Omer with a rally featuring live entertainment, a bar- becue and kid-friendly activities at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Lubavitch Yeshiva's Harry and Wanda Zekelman Campus, 15151 W. 10 Mile, Oak Park. The event, organized by a group of the yeshivah's students, honors the one-day holiday that celebrates the life of Talmudic sage, Rabbi Shimon, son of Yochai. "It could be the biggest such rally the community has seen:' says student David Gabay Menachem Deren, one of the organizers. "After the success of the last two years, we are expecting a crowd of at least 800 people The family event will feature David Gabay, a popular Jewish singer from New York, performing for the first time in Detroit. The theme for the day will be "CommUnity" and is intended to celebrate and encourage Jewish unity. Jews of all ages and affiliation are invited to attend. "This is the main idea of Lag b'Omer — love and unity between Jews and all people says student Levi Gourarie, a native Oak Parker. Admission is $5 with special dis- counts for families. Free Loans Available For Medical, Dental Students Hebrew Free Loan is offering loans through the Dr. Alden M. and Lorraine Leib Medical/Dental Education Fund. The Leibs estab- lished their fund with a donation that makes scholarships available to Jewish students pursuing a medical or dental education or specialty in Michigan. The Leibs feel strongly that estab- lishing this important fund at Hebrew Free Loan gives Jewish students an opportunity to lessen their debt bur- den when pursuing a medical or den- tal degree, with the added potential benefit of keeping those students in Michigan when their studies end and their professional practices begin. The fund operates under the umbrella of the William Davidson Jewish College Loan Program admin- istered by Hebrew Free Loan, using the existing online application and using the same parameters for bor- rowers.
