Renovated Hillel at WSU
is cause for celebration.

t was a housewarming of sorts — a
community celebration of the recent-
ly renovated Hillel of Metro Detroit's
(HMD) offices at Wayne State University.
A group of 130 Jewish community lead-
ers, Hillel supporters, students and
university officials cheerfully crowded
together on the sixth floor of the Student
Center on April 15 for a reception and
dedication.

Ull ax and Eli Sussman are cooking up some exciting plans.
The brothers, raised in Huntington Woods, have left their
chef jobs at trendy New York restaurants so they can open their
own eatery in NYC. It will be a Mediterranean restaurant featuring home-
made pita, non-traditional dips such as beet hummus and lentil pistachio
dip, anchovy fattoush salad, fried sweet potatoes with zhug (a Middle
Eastern spicy hot sauce) and other dishes still in the development stage.
And they've just published another cookbook, their fourth. They held a
release party and signed copies of Classic Recipes for Modern People (Olive
Press) on April 11 at Signal-Return in the Brush Park area of Detroit, a
printmaking and letterpress shop where their mom, artist Lynne Avadenka,
is artistic director. The crowd was a mix of the brothers' friends, their
mom's artist-world buddies and many from Congregation B'nai
Moshe in West Bloomfield who've known them since childhood.
The brothers have always been interested in food. Eli, 29,
says his earliest kitchen memory is baking brownies with his
mom as a young child and licking the bowl. Avadenka was a
stickler for fresh ingredients and refused to have a microwave
in their kitchen.
