to its residents living on the Eugene

Bloomfield. Sponsored by Bernard and
Judith Cantor in memory of their late art-
ist daughter Ellen, the class has been a
winter staple at the Meer Residence every
other week.
"It's relaxing, you get to speak to other
people, and it's a great course says Batsheba
Zietchick, a Queens, N.Y., native who moved
with her husband to Meer a year ago. "My
husband's art is so fabulous. People say, 'I
can't believe it. This is so beautiful:"
In fact, Leo Zietchick was an artist
before retirement, with his stained glass
work exhibited in New York galleries. His
wife was not an artist until she took the
class, which is taught by Sydney James.
Their work and that of their peers will be
exhibited alongside Ellen Cantor's works
on April 30 at Meer. A community recep-
tion will take place from 10:30 a.m.-noon
that day, and the artwork will be displayed
throughout that weekend.

When the Cantors' daughter, a famous
artist based in New York and London, died
at age 50 two years ago, the Cantors decided
to create an endowment to gift an art pro-
gram at Jewish Senior Life, reminiscent of
the class Ellen Cantor led early in her career
at Borman Hall, Jewish Home for Aged.
The class takes place every other
Thursday from January through April, an
enticing activity to engage residents dur-
ing the cold winter months, says Renee
Fein, JSL project coordinator. Older adults
are encouraged to paint on canvas, led by
James, a former high school art teacher
who has a master's degree from the
College for Creative Studies.
"A lot of people didn't think they were
artists, but you see what they've created:'
Fein says. "They have this innate artistic
nature they didn't know existed until they
tried. They can't believe they are able to
create such beautiful are

'HNOLOGY

Jack Driker, a Meer resident, has been
working on a portrait of Picasso. Art is "a
favorite activity:' he says. "We have some
talented people here:'
Art can be a powerful activity for older
adults, according to the American Art
Therapy Association. Art programs in
older adult residences can contribute to
the overall quality of life of seniors, the
association notes.
But it goes deeper than that. Research
shows that creating art can help older adults
communicate with caregivers and family,
promote awareness and self-expression,
relieve anxiety and cope with transition and
illness. Plus, it's a fun experience that older
adults enjoy with their peers, and it's engag-
ing for individuals with prior artistic talent
or those who are just beginning. ❑
