range of emotions as Anne.

"We weave back into where she is at
certain points in her stay at the annex:'
Farb says of the drama written by Frances
Goodrich and Albert Hackett with adapta-
tion by Wendy Kesselman.
"The play is a bit vignette-oriented. We
go from a scene that is extremely dramatic
[awakening from a horrifying nightmare
about Nazis] to a scene that is whimsical
[giving out Chanukah presents]:'
Stratford casting, decided year-to-year,
gave Farb the opportunity to stage a one-
woman play she has written — R-E-B-E-
C-C-A — at the Theatre Passe Muraille in
Toronto.
"The play is about my sister, who is
developmentally delayed:' Farb explains.
"It looks at the notion of what it is to turn
18 even though still a kind of child. It also
looks at a hypothetical version of my sister
had she been functioning [typically]:'
Farb, in a relationship with a musician/
musical director, looks forward to seeing
Stratford exhibits that will enhance the
Anne Frank production (see "While You're
There" on this page).
Rothenberg, also playing a dream role,
is working with director/choreographer
Donna Feore to bring personalized dimen-
sions to the Rodgers and Hammerstein hit.
"I want to honor Julie Andrews' legacy
by looking at Maria from a fresh and new
perspective as if I'd never seen The Sound
of Music, explains Rothenberg, 25, whose
career started in childhood — on the com-
munity stages and in the recording studios
of Nashville.
"It's how I've approached other roles that
have been iconic in the same way. I did a
production of Roman Holiday and played
the role that Audrey Hepburn played:'
For Stratford, Rothenberg wants Maria
to come across as being grounded in
nature, the Earth and the mountains, and

very spiritual but not in a conventional
way.
A bit to the dismay of her dad, cancer
researcher Mace Rothenberg, early recog-
nition came through the Christian music
of the South as Rothenberg made chil-
dren's recordings long before celebrating
her bat mitzvah.
After moving through projects for
Nickelodeon and Disney as well as stage
work, Rothenberg enrolled in theater stud-
ies at New York University.
"I was in my junior year when I audi-
tioned for a Broadway revival of How to

Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
and was cast in the ensemble," she recalls.
"I left the university and was asked to
understudy the leading lady:'
As it turned out, she got to play the star-
ring role, first with Daniel Radcliffe and
then regularly with Nick Jonas.
"I also worked on a lot of new musicals
at great theaters," Rothenberg says. "I cre-
ated characters based on new text and
new music and found those characters
with the writers, composers and directors
before anybody else [had the parts]. That's
been exciting, and I'd love to continue to
do that:'
Settling into Stratford, Rothenberg has
been visited by her boyfriend, who works
for a New York tech company.
"The Stratford theater makes me
feel so connected to the audience says
Rothenberg, whose television work has
included a role on the recent Tina Fey
Netflix series, The Unbreakable Kimmy
Schmidt. "I'm never more than 6 feet from
an audience member.
At this point in my life, I especially
relate to a line I sing from a place of
gratitude: 'My heart will be blessed with
the sound of music, and I'll sing once
more:" ❑
