amilies can celebrate Lag
b'Omer in delicious style at the
Great Jewish Family Festival
on Thursday, May 7, at Heritage Park
in Farmington Hills. Presented by The
Shul in West Bloomfield, this year's cel-
ebration introduces a new tradition, the
Great Kosher Food Fest, a food-court
style feast featuring a variety of tasty
offerings from local kosher chefs such
as Jewel Kosher Catering, Sara's Deli and
Chef Cari.
There will be fun activities for all
ages: live music, archery, carnival games,
hikes, crafts, T-shirts and an exciting
fire-juggling show, all set against the
backdrop of a 25-foot bonfire construct-
ed and supervised by the Farmington
Hills Fire Department.
The main food court, which opens at
4:30 p.m., includes traditional barbecue
favorites such as hot dogs, burgers and
chicken, plus a selection of creative
salads, sides and tempting desserts. An
additional food court will open from
6:30-8:30 p.m., featuring lighter fare and
marshmallow roasting.
The festival commemorates Lag
b'Omer, which celebrates the anniver-
sary of the death of the Rabbi Shimon
bar Yochai, the scholar and mystic who
is credited with authoring the Zohar,
the foundational work in the literature
of Jewish mystical thought known as
Kabbalah.
The holiday also honors the disciples
of the great sage Rabbi Akiva, known
for his message of brotherly love. Lag
b'Omer is traditionally celebrated with
outings, bonfires and other joyous
events, and it is customary for children
to participate in contests using bows and
arrows.
The event is co-sponsored by JFamily,
a program of Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, Friendship Circle
of Michigan and Chef Cari Kosher
Catering. A grant was also received from
Kroger. Additional sponsorship opportu-
nities are still available.
"Last year, more than 500 people
attended our celebration; this year we
hope at least twice that many will join
us for this fun event:' said Itty Shemtov,
education director of The Shul. ❑
