Vignettes From The JN Archives Mike Smith Detroit Jewish News Foundation Archivist T he Detroit Jewish News Archives holds some fascinat- ing stories, to say the least. While working with the archives last week, I ran across a story about a mili- tary hero that you may not have heard of, but is someone you may know. As the U.S Army, along with its British and Canadian allies, began closing in on Nazi Germany itself, the fighting was hot and heavy. In November 1944, as a German artillery barrage created numerous casualties among the American soldiers, one man took it upon himself to jump out of the relative safety of his foxhole to help his wounded comrades. He dragged as many of them as he could to safety while shells were exploding all around him and administered first aid as best he could. For his bravery as noted above, Corporate Creative Director Deborah Schultz dschultz@renmedia.us Page Twenty-Four Pfc. G. H. Landau Wins Commendation From General for Heroism Under Fire A unique commendation for heroism was recently awarded to Pfc. Graham H. Landau by Maj. Gen. William A. Burris,. The photograph shows Maj.- Gen. Burriss presenting the com- mendation to Pfc. Landau, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Landau of 2291 Longfellow. The citation, presented at an overseas post, reads: "On 20 November 1944, during an intense artillery barrage which inflicted numerous casualties, Private Landau voluntarily left his foxhole to administer aid to his wounded comrades; then, dur- ing the continuing barrage, help- ed to evacuate the injured to a place of safety." Pfc. Landau has been in serv- ice since May, 1993, and has been overseas since October. He is with the 100th Infantry Division with the 7th Army somewhere in Germany. A graduate of the United He- brew Schools and Central High, Pfc. Landau excelled on the track and football teams at Central. Maj. Gen. William A. Burriss gave Pfc. Graham H. Landau an accommoda- tion for heroism under fire. This was reported in the DJN in February 1945. Landau returned from the war and became a successful businessman in Detroit. Controller Craig R.
