klreic~ to-
tern and choosing yarn colors. "It takes
me approximately eight hours to com-
plete a mezuzah," Weisberg said.
"As far as the design, some are no
brainers because they are all Jewish
themes and usually I will add the ubiq-
uitous (Hebrew letter) 'shin: However, I
have been inspired by designs I see on
wrapping paper, wallpaper; and now I
am offering to copy a couple's wedding
monogram off their invitation. I have
done all of the 12 tribes, and my dream
is for someone with a 12-room house to
buy all the siblings:' she said.
Weisberg also creates custom designs,
including a detailed chuppah scene that
included sophisticated beading.
Linda Zacks also chose a more intri-
cate mezuzah pattern for her home in
Jerusalem. "Ruchie is very talented and
very creative said the former Detroiter.
"Many years ago, we had a business
together where we designed and sold
barrettes and pins made out of puzzle
pieces and plastic-themed items. We
sold them to Jacobson's and even Tiger
Stadium among other places:"
The mezuzah Zacks chose is high-
lighted by the "seven species" — wheat,
barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates,
olives and dates — that are listed in the
Bible as products of Israel. "My husband
Joel and I are going to hang it on the
entrance to the living room, which is
the main room in our apartment:' she
said. "The workmanship is par excel-
lence. The Lucite cases that Ruchie had
made complement her artwork Also,
she personalized mine by writing our
last name in Hebrew, which makes it
even more personal and special to me:'
Weisberg's hope is that the mezuzahs
will be a striking and significant addi-
tion to many homes as well as helping
to support the Yeshoeah Foundation.
"I believe that by offering an origi-
nal piece of art, people will be more
inclined to make a donation," she said.
"I am very proud of my work, and
I am thrilled to know such an integral
piece of Judaica is being lovingly housed
in a Jewish home. They are all a testi-
mony to my mother's memory and the
tzedakah being given in her honor:'
