Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Township will
hold its 73rd Annual Rabbi B. Benedict and
Ada S. Glazer Institute on Judaism 1-3 p.m.
Monday, April 27.
This year, TBE will continue its tradition
of leading broader discussions that apply to
multiple faiths by presenting "The Legacy of
Vatican II: 50 Years of Interfaith Relations:
Vatican II (and specifically the Nostra

This year's Glazer Institute is meant to
utilize Nostra Aetate as a starting point to
determine together what the religious nature
of Detroit will hold for the next 50 years.

ly a clergy event, congregants, members and
friends may participate. The event is free. To
RSVP, contact Laura Lucassian at llucassian@

his year, Holocaust
Remembrance Day in the
United States is April 16. This
is different from the International
Holocaust Memorial Day of Jan. 27, as
established by the United Nations.
While not a federal holiday, in 1979,
Congress passed a joint resolution to
establish the "Days of Remembrance of
Victims of the Holocaust" They chose
April 28-29 as the days for that year
because those were the days in 1945
when American troops liberated the
Dachau concentration camp.
Sen. John Danforth of Missouri was
the author of the resolution. Since this
time, the eight-day commemoration
is determined by the date of Nisan 27
on the Hebrew calendar; the day is
also known as Yom HaShoah. From
the Sunday before that day, through
the following Sunday, is the Week of
Remembrance.
In 1981, Michigan Gov. William
Milliken signed an executive declara-

Remembrance Days. Members of
Detroit's Jewish community were in
attendance. It might also be noted that
the first woman president of the Jewish
Community Relations Council, Marian
Shiffman, was there. The Detroit
Jewish News was there and covered the
story. ❑
