E very so often, but quite rarely, a fam- ily restaurant will open to cater to the needs of the various tastebuds of its customers and friends. One like Brass Pointe, Orchard Lake Road, just north of 10 Mile, Farmington Hills, is celebrating its 34th anniversary with features that include barbecued ribs and barbecued or broasted chicken as its main selections along with seafood, Mexican specialties, prime rib, steaks, etc. There has never been a shortage of Mexican-only restaurants ... Many good ones are available to satisfy "south-of-the- border" appetites that often capture one's fancy. And there are restaurants that may have other cultures, too, but concentrate mainly on one ... Such is Brass Pointe, whose main forte has always been barbecued and broast- ed offerings ... although customers also enjoy its broiled whitefish among the seafood items, prime rib, steak and hamburgers, etc. This wide selection has proven through the decades to be an important asset in the dining desires of many ... Like two or four or more people sitting at tables and booths and given their menu choices from a three-fold varied selection that takes in the barbecued and broasted choices, Mexican specialties, steaks, prime rib, etc. ... Other items you can order, like coconut shrimp, are not listed on the menu. As it was under the res- taurant's original name of Pumpernik's, still available are the Mexican and American dishes ... When it changed its name to Brass Pointe in 1986, even more American features were added ... However, the concentration on barbecuing and broasting was prevalent, even though more features were added ... Best-sellers today by far are the St. Louis ribs, slow-cooked baby backs, and barbecued and broasted chicken. Both owners, Bob Mihajlovski and Danny Nestorovich, came here from the former Yugoslavia ... Bob arrived in 1967 and Danny two years later ... So it is entirely pos- sible that the name Pumpernik's might never have been thought by them of as that of a delicatessen. Weekly numbers are striking ... over 2,000 pounds of ribs, more than 2,500 pounds of chicken, 600 pounds of baby back ribs, around 100 pounds of shrimp, 500 pounds of prime rib, around 100 gallons of barbecue sauce, etc. Brass Pointe is open seven days ... Mon.-Sat., 11-10; Sun., noon-1 a.m. ... Seating in the dining room is 200, stools at the bar for14 and more seat- ing for 60 in the banquet room, which is also used for the overflow, especially on weekends ... Quite a difference in capacity from when it originally opened ... between 60 and 70 seats. Bob is remembered by many from his previous days as owner of the Advance Building Cafeteria on Nine Mile and Greenfield, Southfield. Family dining spots like Brass Pointe are very much wanted ... Indo opened this past October with the excellent asset of extreme cleanliness ... Tables and booths are available to seat 85 six days a week ...
