Striking Out

Steve Stein

owling a 300 game isn't easy.
But it was done twice last
month in the Brotherhood-
Eddie Jacobson B'nai B'rith League at
Country Lanes in Farmington Hills. Here
are the stories behind the perfect games.

No More
Kidding
Rick Woolman has
joined the club.
His three team-
mates on the Seal
Team 7 squad in the
Brotherhood-Eddie
Rick Woolman
Jacobson League all
have at least one 300 game on their bowl-
ing resume. Now Woolman has one, too.
He achieved perfection March 23,
throwing a 300 game to wrap up a 225-
201-300 — 726 series and stop some
good-natured kidding from teammates
Barry Fishman, Mort Friedman and Eric
Goldberg about not having a 300.
Woolman, 57, became part of the
team in January for the second half of
the league season after being a substitute
in the league during the first half. He
bowled in the league for 25 years, took
seven years off and returned this year.
"It's been a lot of fun:' the West
Bloomfield resident said.
It sure was fun March 23. He had
never rolled 11 straight strikes to start a
game until that night.
The right-hander's goal on his 12th
ball was to shoot his normal shot, which
was working well.
"But I didn't have quite enough lift on
the release on my 12th ball and I hit the
pocket a little light:' he said.
The 2 pin wobbled "for what seemed
like forever" before falling.
Woolman feels he had some Divine
intervention on the perfection-clinching
shot. March 23 was his late grandmoth-
er's birthday.
As is custom in most leagues, a large
crowd had gathered when Woolman
began his 10th frame with an opportu-
nity for a 300 game.
"It was so quiet. No one else in the
house was bowline he said.
Woolman almost didn't bowl that
night. He wasn't feeling well, suffering

from laryngitis; his wife thought he
should stay home and rest. He didn't, and
the rest is history. His average is 190, so
each game he bowled March 23 was bet-
ter than usual.
Woolman grew up in Southfield and
graduated from Southfield-Lathrup High
in 1975. He is a chiropractor with an
office in Clinton Township.

Spartan Style

Aaron Radner made
the most of his spring
break from Michigan
State University.
Bowling as a sub-
stitute March 9 in the
Brotherhood-Eddie
Aaron Radner
Jacobson League, he
rolled his first 300 game. He bowled 232-
192-300 — 724.
At age 20, he's believed to be the
youngest bowler to throw a 300 in league
history.
Even at his age, the Farmington Hills
resident is no stranger to success on the
lanes.
He was a standout bowler at North
Farmington High School and an
Academic All-State selection.
The MSU sophomore is in his second
year on the school's club bowling team
and is ranked 178th in the country. His
188 college average is a bit misleading,
he said, because college competitions are
held on professional-style lane condi-
tions.
Radner was bowling for only
the fourth time this season in the
Brotherhood-Eddie Jacobson League
when he rolled his 300.
The right-hander had never thrown
more than nine straight strikes to start a
game, so he admits he was nervous after
his 10th strike went into the books.
"I tried to focus on making good
shots:' he said.
Radner changed bowling balls late
in the second game. After finishing the
game strong, he decided to stick with the
new ball for the third game and the strat-
egy paid off with 12 solid pocket hits.
Next on his bowling bucket list is an
800 series, which he believes is more dif-
ficult than throwing a 300 game.
