Israeli Soldiers Tour
Comes To Town
The StandWithUs (SWU) annual Israeli
Soldiers Tour will visit the Detroit area
on Thursday-Friday, April 16-17.
The tour features reserve-duty Israeli
soldier-students who recount their per-
sonal experiences serving in the Israel
Defense Forces. These stories expose
the dilemmas of military conflict,
including facing an enemy that hides
behind its civilians. They also share
their backgrounds, life in Israel and
answer questions. They put a human
face on the IDF uniform.
"Every year, the soldiers make a
valuable contribution to understanding
the difficulty of the job these young
soldiers face said SWU-Michigan
President Barbara Moretsky.
One of the speakers, Lt. Hen Mazzig,
an Israeli of Tunisian and Iraqi descent,
is a writer, blogger and social media
activist. Hen served in a unit called
COGAT (Coordination of Government
Activities in the Territories) for almost
five years as an intermediary between
the IDF and the Palestinian Authority,
the United Nations and the many non-
governmental organizations (NGOs)
that work in the West Bank. He also
serves as the StandWithUs director of
Israeli education.
In the 2014 conflict between Hamas
and Israel, Hen was called to the
reserves where he continued his work
facilitating humanitarian activities of
the U.N. and various NGOs throughout
the Gaza Strip.
The other speaker, Matan, is an offi-
cer whose last name has been withheld
for security purposes. Although born
and raised in Israel, he spent five years
in the U.S. with his family while his
mother served as a shlichah (emissary)
for the Jewish Agency for Israel.
An alumnus of StandWithUs' 2011
Israel fellowship, Matan is currently
a third-year law student at Bar-Ilan
University. During his time in the IDF,
he served as an officer and deputy com-
pany commander in the Givati Infantry
Brigade commanding 95 soldiers and
officers. He participated as a command-
er in operations in 2006, 2009 and 2014,
all against Hamas in Gaza. In doing so,
he took part in exposing Hamas rocket
manufacturing and rocket launching
toward Israeli towns.
The events Hen and Matan will be
appearing at include:
• Thursday, April 16, at 1 p.m. for
the Institute for Retired Professionals
in Handleman Hall at the JCC in West
