ow does the Western Michigan
University baseball team spell
relief? B-E-R-M-A-N.
Gabe Berman became the Broncos' all-
time career saves leader March 13 when
the former Bloomfield Hills Andover
High School star put the finishing touches
on Western Michigan's 4-3 win over
Lehigh in the Snowbird Classic in Port
Charlotte, Fla.
It was Berman's 17th career save,
breaking a record that had stood since
1989. Berman is a
junior, so he'll have the
rest of this season and
perhaps next year to
add to his total.
The hard-throwing
right-hander has been
Western Michigan's
closer since early in his
Gabe Berman
freshman season. He
doesn't mind having
the game on the line when he's called in
from the bullpen.
"I love having all that pressure on me. I
live for high-pressure situations," he said.
This is an important year for Berman
because he'll be eligible for the Major
League Baseball Draft at the conclusion of
the college season. But he's not thinking
that far ahead.
"Right now, I'm focused on helping
my team:' he said. "I don't know if Major
League teams are looking at me as a
reliever or starter. I'll do whatever I'm
asked to do:'
Berman was named a First Team
Division I All-American baseball player
for the second straight season last year by
the Jewish Sports Review.
He was 1-3 with nine saves and a 2.62
ERA as a sophomore. He led Western
Michigan with 23 appearances and he
struck out 41 in 34'/3 innings. Opposing
batters hit just .231 against him and he
didn't allow a home run.
His nine saves became the third-
highest single-season total in Western
Michigan history and his 23 appearances
were fourth for a single season.
Berman had five of Western Michigan's
10 saves when he was a freshman. He
struck out 18 in 28.1 innings. Batters hit

only .210 against him, and he didn't give
up a homer.
He was a strikeout machine at
Andover, fanning 105 in 632/3 innings as a
junior and 97 in 58 innings as a senior.
Western Michigan was 7-9 this sea-
son heading into its Mid-American
Conference opening series last weekend
at home against Miami (Ohio). The
Broncos played their first 16 games in
Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida.
