Three Women Team To
Help In Weight Loss

T

hree Jewish women — Marla
Kaminsky, owner of the Diet
Center West Bloomfield,
Bloomfield Hills psychotherapist
Karen Davis and Marla Michele Must,
owner of Enchanted Photography in
Birmingham — have joined forces to
present a lecture series to help people
understand the emotional reasons
behind weight gain.
Participants will learn about
the correct way to lose weight and
understand how psychology plays a
vital role. The series is free.
The next lecture is April 9 at the
Enchanted Photography Studios, 423
Frank St. in downtown Birmingham.
The final session is April 23. Single
sessions can be attended.
"Permanent weight loss is much
more than simple changes in diet
and exercise," Kaminsky said. "It is
critically important to be eating the
right balance of carbohydrates, pro-
teins and fats to encourage lipolysis,
or the decomposition of fat, and to
ensure you are not burning lean tis-
sue in excess. Weight loss is not so
complicated, but people need the
right tools and information on how
to succeed and that's why we are here
to help:'
All three women cite Judaism as a

central focus in their lives.
Kaminsky opened the Diet Center
West Bloomfield with the help of
a Marvin I. Danto Small Business
Loan. She serves on the board of
directors for the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit's NextGEN
Detroit and as co-chair of its Liaison
Committee. Her two children attend
Hillel Day School in Farmington
Hills.
Must, voted the Best Photographer
In Michigan 2013/2014 by JN read-
ers, is fluent in Hebrew and a Hillel
Day School graduate.
Davis works closely with Jewish cli-
ents of all ages in her Bloomfield Hills
practice. She is a member of Temple
Israel and traveled to Israel last sum-
mer for her son's bar mitzvah.
Each participant who meets a
weight loss goal will be awarded a
complimentary family photography
session at Enchanted Photography.
"It is so important for women to
help each other lead healthier lives
and be there for each other," Must
said. "Achieving a goal should be cel-
ebrated. I'm thrilled to photograph
these women and their families:' ❑

Hospice Of Michigan
Plans Volunteer Training
Hospice of Michigan will hold a
volunteer training workshop on
Saturday, April 11.
New volunteers are asked to go
through a training course where
they learn about HOM, the prin-
ciples of hospice, the grieving
process and how to help patients,
families and staff.
The session will be held from
9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the HOM Detroit
office, 400 Mack. Advance regis-
tration is required.
Hospice of Michigan is looking
for volunteers to provide patient
care and companionship, grief
support and community outreach
support to clients and families in
Southeast Michigan.
"Our volunteers make a real
difference in the lives of our
patients," said Alison Wagner,
volunteer program manager. "In
just a couple of hours, by playing

cards or reading the newspaper,
volunteers can provide a sense of
normalcy to hospice patients. This
short time also gives caregivers a
brief — but valuable — respite.
"The most important attribute
in a volunteer is a passion for
helping others. While our skilled
and specialty volunteers are
invaluable, we also deeply appreci-
ate those volunteers who provide
companionship and daily assis-
tance. The opportunities to volun-
teer are virtually limitless:'
