Akiva delegation to AIPAC
returns with two major awards.

A

kiva Hebrew Day School in
Southfield sent a delegation
of 12 students with Assistant
Principal Kathy Sklar to the recent
AIPAC 2015 Policy Conference in
Washington, D.C.
At the first annual high school
breakfast in the history of the confer-
ence, the school was awarded Best
High School Partner for its activity on
behalf of AIPAC, and Sklar was award-
ed best high school adviser.
Sklar says her students attend all
local AIPAC events and have built
extremely close relationships with
the offices of U.S. Sen. Gary Peters
and U.S. Rep. Brenda Lawrence, both
Democrats.
At the conference, after Prime
Minister Netanyahu's speech, the
group waited outside a meeting room
for Lawrence and had an on-the-spot
session with her. They also reminded
her that they were a group she read
stories to when they were in kinder-
garten. They are graduating in June.
"She is close to Akiva," Sklar said.
"They spent a bit of time with her — it
took chutzpah — but they under-

stand the nature of building relation-
ships and lobbying on behalf of the
American-Israel relationship, among
others.
"And to us, another relationship so
important is with Gary Peters. When
we write to Gary via Eric Feldman, his
chief of staff, Eric answers after having
sent our messages on to Gary.
"It is about relationship building,
and we have done that:' she said.
Sklar is clearly proud of her stu-
dents. She said the students who
attended the conference have gone
to Panim El Panim, a three-day
BBYO seminar in Washington, D.C.;
to AIPAC's Schusterman Advocacy
Institute High School Summit and to
its Saban College Leadership confer-
ences, where only 50 high school
students from around the country are
invited from the 50 partner schools
and youth programs.
Speaking about her award, Sklar
said, "My kids are why I received
my award. It is about teaching them
to advocate, to build relationships,
to lobby, to educate the members of
Congress, on any issue, but, obviously,
in support of the American-Israel rela-
tionship:'
This is the second AIPAC confer-
ence Akiva delegates attended, but
they have a long history with AIPAC's
Schusterman summits. The school has
two StandWithUs interns and is active
in Yeshiva University's model United
Nations program, where this year Cobi
Nadel was awarded best delegate and
Isaac Wolfe earned a first honorable
mention.
"It is citizenship, being involved in
society in a positive way as they move
into adulthood:' Sklar said. "Akiva kids
become involved citizens and under-
stand why it is critical to do so now
and as adults. They will remain so, I
am convinced:'
