"Much-heralded Star Deli slow-cooks
its own tender temptations"

L
ongtime friends and team-
mates Sean Wigler and
Michael Kolodin enjoyed —
well, at least mostly enjoyed — their
senior season on the West Bloomfield
High School hockey
team.
Wigler became the
team's all-time lead-
ing career scorer.
The 6-foot-1, 175-
pound center had 20
goals and 32 assists
Sean Wigler
for 52 points in 26
games, giving him
39 goals, 65 assists
and 104 points in
four years with the
Lakers.
The former record
holder was Zach
Rogow, who had 94
points.
Kolodin (5-10,
Michael
185) split his time
Kolodin
between defense and
forward in his fourth
season at West Bloomfield, finish-
ing with 12 goals and 11 assists in 18
games. He missed eight games because
of a concussion.
The Lakers finished 15-9-2 overall
— a dramatic improvement from their
4-22 record in the 2013-2014 season
after being a state quarterfinalist in
2012-2013. This year, they were 5-4-1
in the Oakland Activities Association
White Division.
Wigler was the leading scorer in the
OAA White and among teams across
the state that uploaded statistics to the
Michigan High School Hockey Hub
website; he was second in shots, fourth
in hits and ninth in plus-minus.
Second-year West Bloomfield coach
Joe Chagnon spoke highly of Wigler
and Kolodin, the team's co-captains,
and two other Jewish players on
his roster: sophomore defenseman
Noah Past and junior forward Drew
Warneke.
Chagnon said Wigler did his best
work in the "dirty areas of the ice
namely the corners and in front of
the net, and regularly put himself in
position to capitalize on his scoring
chances.
Wigler had six points as a fresh-
man, 22 points as a sophomore and 22
points as a junior.
He credited the improvement to
growing five inches in height between
his freshman and sophomore years,
and a serious commitment to make his
C
senior season a good one.
Wigler is headed to Arizona State
University, where he plans to play
club hockey because he wants to make
academics his top priority. He plans to
major in marketing.
"I can't give up hockey. I love it way
too much:' he said.
Why Arizona State?
"I absolutely hate winter weather
in the Midwest:' he said. "I love the
dry heat in Arizona. You don't have
to worry about allergies, and you can
play golf anytime
Wigler is a two-handicap golfer
and a member of this spring's West
Bloomfield boys golf team.
Chagnon said Kolodin was a gritty
hockey player like Wigler, and the two
worked well together when they were
briefly on the same line this season for
the first time.
"That was great being on the same
line with Sean:' Kolodin said.
What wasn't great was suffering
a concussion that caused him to be
hospitalized for a night. It was his sec-
ond concussion. He also had one as a
sophomore playing lacrosse for West
Bloomfield.
Kolodin is going to Lincoln
Memorial University in Harrogate,
Tenn., on the border of the
Cumberland Gap National Historical
Park, to play lacrosse for the school's
NCAA Division II team. He's a de-
fenseman in lacrosse and will play this
spring for West Bloomfield.
"I'm an outdoors kind of guy, so I'm
looking forward to going to a school in
the Appalachian Mountains:' he said.
Past could be the future face of the
West Bloomfield hockey team.
After going through expected grow-
ing pains as a freshman, Chagnon said,
Past was a much better player this
year. He didn't score, but he had 11
assists in 26 games.
"Noah has a great shot and he
makes good decisions with the puck:'
Chagnon said.
Warneke had nine goals and 18
assists in 26 games in his second year
on the team.
Chagnon said Warneke is a student
of the game who always wants to
please his coaches and get better.
The team's Jewish connection also
included assistant coach Russell
Suskind, a former two-year captain
of the Syracuse University hockey
team.
