An Uptown Feast!
Uptown Parthenon in West Bloomfield offers the flavors of Greektown.
G
reektown in Detroit has earned a
fine reputation as a legendary eth-
nic restaurant area, much like New
Orleans' French Quarter or for fine Greek
food, the Plaka in Athens, Greece.
Greektown continues to serve
Metropolitan Detroit and surrounding areas
with high local regard ... Plus national rec-
ognition.
However, it is no longer necessary to go
only to Greektown to enjoy a tastebud expe-
rience of succulent, authentic Greek food.
There have always been Greek restaurants
outside of Greektown, but rarely one that
stands out as an almost-equal of those in
Downtown Detroit's well-known region.
One like Uptown Parthenon, celebrating
its 16th anniversary at Orchard Lake and
Lone Pine roads in Crosswinds Center, West
Bloomfield ... The taste of its fine dishes is,
without question, the authentic nectar of
the gods.
You'll hardly find many places outside of
Greektown that serve those large, tender,
delicious double-bone lamb chops ... or,
on a regular basis, tasty and juicy Lamb
Reganato baked in an olive oil lemon
oregano sauce ... or tastebud-loving lamb
with Rosa Marina pasta, or with rice pilaf
in tomato sauce or with fresh vegetables ...
and, of course, the luscious Spanakotiropita
(spinach cheese pie) or broiled sea bass, etc.
Owners of the noted New
Parthenon Greek restaurant in
Greektown, brothers Polyvios
and Dimitris Panagopoulos, and
friends, brothers Leo and John
Stassinopoulos, co-owners of
Leo's Coney Island, wanted to
put their authentic Greek cui-
sine into the West Bloomfield
area ... Their thought was that
people desired staying closer to
home without having to venture
to Downtown for really true
Greek food.
It was to their good fortune that Tony
Hadjisofroniou had sold his half share
ownership of Greektown's Cyprus Taverna
restaurant ... It was a huge opportunity
of eagerly obtaining him to oversee the
launching of Uptown Parthenon as its gen-
eral manager.
Best-sellers have become those luscious
lamb chops, Moussaka layers of eggplant
with its Old World recipe of ground beef
topped with bechamel, pastitsio (baked
eggplant noted as traditional Greek lasa-
gna) among other favorites on the menu ...
Not on the menu is the vegetarian delight
of stuffed eggplant with roasted eggplant
rolled around artichokes, asparagus, toma-
to/basil sauce and topped with feta cheese
... and Soutzoukia, meatballs spiced with
cumin, fresh garlic and rosemary in a tradi-
tional tomato sauce.
Few, if any, other Greek restaurants have
Neframia, the roasted loin of lamb with
Greek seasonings simmered for four hours
in its own natural juices ... And vegetar-
ians, among others, enjoy the wide variety
of combination plates and special dishes.
It is with much satisfaction that
Metropolitan Detroit has an authentic Greek
restaurant on a par with most of those in
Greektown ... This is truly a legacy in eth-
nic dining to be appreciated ... and Uptown
Parthenon has fit the bill with many kudos
on its 16th anniversary.
