B'nai B'rith To Distribute
Passover Food To Needy
As part of B'nai B'rith International's
Program, Project HOPE (Helping Our
People Everywhere), on Sunday, March
29, at Jewish Family Service in West
Bloomfield, B'nai B'rith volunteers will be
packaging boxes of non-perishable, kosher-
for-Passover food items for distribution to
less-fortunate local families.
The success of the project depends on
the generosity of individual donors, trea-
sury gifts from B'nai B'rith Lodges and
Units, and partners, Busch's Market in
West Bloomfield and Office Connection in
Farmington Hills.
Anyone interested in making a contri-
bution or helping with the packaging can
contact the B'nai B'rith office at (248) 646-
3100.

Detroit Jewish News
Foundation Archivist
read an article about Golda Meir,
former Prime Minister of Israel
(1969-1974), and I wondered — did
she ever visit Detroit?
Golda Meir was the first and only
female prime minister of Israel. At that
time, Meir was only the fourth woman
in history to be elected to that office
in any nation. She was known as being
strong-willed and straight talking; Meir
was the "Iron Lady" long before British
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher
received that title from the press. She
was indeed tough and led Israel through
what was perhaps its darkest hour: the
1973 Yom Kipper War.
But, did she come to Detroit? Yes, she
did. Numerous times. Per the pages of
the Detroit Jewish News, Meir came to
Detroit in the 1920s, long before she
was famous, as well as in the 1940s,
1950s and shortly after Israel's 1967 War.

the United Nations General Assembly is Mrs. Golda Mein
Foreign Minister of the State of Israel, who was met by
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz (left), vice president of the Israel
Bond Organization, and Israel Ambassador Abba Eban.
Duringlier stay in the United State, Mrs. Meir will address
Israel Bond meetings in 20 communities throughout the
country. She will be in Detroit on Monday.
On Nov. 23, 1956, the JN announced
that Meir was in America to attend ses-
sions of the United Nations and, after-
ward, that she would come to Detroit.
To say the least, Meir recognized the
importance of the city's Jewish commu-
nity's support for Israel. ❑
