n Sunday, March 1,
Michigan Jewish Institute
(MJI) held a hamantashen
bake-off and costume party in
honor of Purim at The Shul in West
Bloomfield. Participants were the
students from MJI's three levels of
Hebrew classes, composed of local
high school and college students.
To continue the educational effort
and add some fun to the bake-off,
the hamantashen recipe was con-
verted to Hebrew.
The students had a great time
rolling out the dough, filling it with
assorted jelly flavors or chocolate chips
and baking the cookies in the oven.
The best part was last — eating them!
Ellery Isenstein and Ariel Golnick,
both of West Bloomfield, teamed
up and created the largest chocolate
chip hamantash of the day.
First prize for the best costume went
to Daniel Portal of Oak Park, who
dressed up as a Starbucks employee.
Talya Dovas of Huntington Woods won
second prize, dressed as Queen Esther.

Ellery Isenstein and Ariel Golnick,

Miriam Buckwold, manager of MJI
Dual Enrollment, prepared mishloach
manos (Purim gift baskets) for each
student. The afternoon was a huge and
delicious success.
Mark your calendar for Sunday, May
17, at 6:30 p.m. for MJI's next Open
House at The Shul. The evening will
offer attendees the opportunity to
learn about MJI's many Hebrew classes
as well as the other courses available at
the school. All students, whether inter-
ested in earning a bachelor's degree or
continuing education, are welcome to
attend.

he women of Temple
Emanu-El in Oak Park had
a great time celebrating the
Purim holiday, enjoying a festive
meal, wine and some added sur-
prises.
The evening began with a henna
artist providing tattoos to all who
wanted them. The women then
shared a delicious Middle Eastern
meal from Pita Cafe, followed by a
belly dance performance by Lana
Mini. Lana then taught everyone a
set of belly dance moves. The ladies
loved the booty shimmy!
