Women In Biblical Times
Is Focus Of Lecture
The Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies
at Wayne State University announces an
upcoming lecture by Professor Rachel
Havrelock of the
University of Illinois at
Chicago. The talk, titled
"Women, Power and
Agency in the Jewish
Bible is co-sponsored by
Congregation T'chiyah in
Oak Park
Havrelock is associ-
Rachel
ate
professor of Jewish
Havrelock
studies and English at
UI-Chicago. Trained in Hebrew Bible, rab-
binics, folklore and Middle East studies at
the University of California, Berkeley, her
research concerns three distinct areas and
the overlap among them.
This lecture will focus on the narrative of
women in the Bible. An initial goal of the
feminist movement was to break women out
of the home with the implication that home
was a confining place separate from the pub-
lic sphere. Havrelock's talk visits the home in
ancient Israel and discovers surprisingly that
women served as heads of households and
that these households played a central role in
political life.
Her lecture will be at 2 p.m. Sunday,
March 8, at Congregation T'chiyah, 15000
W. 10 Mile in Oak Park The talk is free and
open to the public. For details, contact the
Cohn-Haddow Center at (313) 577-2679, by
email at cohnhaddowcenter@wayne.edu or

appy Shushan Purim! But
what is Shushan Purim?
Shushan Purim, on March
6, 2015, is the day after one of the most
joyous and fun holidays on the Jewish
calendar — Purim. It commemorates
the day when the Jews of Shushan, the
Persian capital, finally rested on the
15th day after defeating their enemies
on the 14th day of Adar in the Hebrew
calendar.
In the Book of Esther, it is noted that
the rest of the Jews in the kingdom
fought and defeated their enemies on
the 13th day and rested on the 14th day
of Adar. This is why Purim is celebrated
on the 14th day of Adar and Shushan
Purim is celebrated on the 15th day.
Because of the community celebra-
tions that take place on Purim, some
Jews look after the dead and have their
